2016 BET Awards: see the best looks from the red carpet

by Paige Exell -

The 2016 BET Awards went down at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles last night, where stars gathered to celebrate the mass achievements in black entertainment and honour music, sports, television, and motion pictures released throughout the year. With actors Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross hosting the festivities, a Prince tribute that would go down in history, and some of our favourite style mavens in attendance, the night was definitely one to remember.

Stars in attendance included Drake, Beyonce, and Rihanna, along with an epic lineup of performers including Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Future, and of course, Sheila E. and Stevie Wonder who performed a tribute to the late Prince. Nominees included everyone from Adele, to Beyonce, The Weeknd, Drake, Fetty Wap, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, and more.

Meanwhile, some of our favourite looks of the night came from Yara Shahidi to Tia Mowry and Sophie Beem.

Read through to find out some of our favourite looks of the night!

Actress Jasmine Sanders caught our eye wearing a black and white mini, long-sleeved dress decorated with checkers and tie-ups down the front. Her hair was slicked back into a tight ponytail that allowed her dress to have its moment in the spotlight.

Actress Yara Shahidi stunned on the red carpet in a striped, multi-coloured Tracy Reese sequin gown that kept things interesting and made for the perfect summer look. She paired the dress with metallic gold strappy heels and a maroon velvet clutch that complimented her colourful ensemble. As for her hair, it was voluminous, curly, and swept to the side adding a little extra oomph to her look.

American actress and model Karrueche Tran stepped out wearing a fitted black Fausto Puglisi dress with gold buttons and a squared neckline. She matched the dress' gold accents with a gold choker, bangles, and gold heels that lit up under the spotlight. Her hair was sleek and pulled back into a tight top-knot, one of the season's most popular red carpet hair trends and a look we love!

Music artist and Beyonce prodigy Sophie Beem went for an old-world romantic appeal with Shakespearean bubble sleeves and regal embellishments making up her maroon and pink mini dress. She complimented her dress with a pair of red Schutz sandals, and kept her beauty look more on the natural side with long, beach-y waves that brushed past her shoulders.

Actress Tia Mowry opted for a nude, black and white Roberto Cavalli mini dress that featured long sleeves, a high neck, and silver embellishments that hung from every part of the dress like chandeliers. She kept her beauty look simple with dark brown lids that complimented the nudes in her dress, and a sleek up-do that added a touch of elegance to her bold look.

Beyonce's new protegees Chloe and Halle Bailey wowed on the BET Awards red carpet in matching ensembles that showed off their individual personalities. While Chloe opted for a pair of distressed denim layered under a black, red, white and grey striped dress and topped off with denim heels, Halle went for a more traditionally feminine look, wearing a black, red, and white striped gown adorned with ruffles and a mesh neckline.
