While the MTV Video Music Awards are an excuse for celebrities to celebrate their fellow artists and dress up in some of the most outrageous outfits of the year, it's also an excuse to try out some of the season's hottest – not to mention, most over-the-top – beauty trends.
This year, celebrities forgot about balance and matched their bold fashion choices to their makeup looks. Whether it was sequin gowns and matching glitter lids, or coloured eye shadow that made psychedelic patterns pop, there were no rules on this years' red carpet.

BEAUTY TRENDS FROM THE 2016 VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS
While glitter eyelids and brows were a major beauty trend for summer 2016, the fall 2016/17 runways showed us a new way to wear the look: glitter lips. It started with Versace's Fall 2016/17 runway show, where models like Taylor Hill sported blood red lipstick that sparkled under the spotlight. Now, the trend is popping up on lips everywhere, inspiring us to rock the bold look for ourselves.
The latest place to see the trend? On Naomi Campbell at last night's VMAs. The supermodel complimented her velvet green mini dress with a bold red glitter lip. She wasn't afraid to keep the rest of her look equally as bold, wearing a metallic purple-brown shadow, pink blush and long, full lashes for one seriously glam look.
Whether it's a dark smoky eye, graphic liner, or full lashes, dark eyes have become a major beauty trend for fall 2016. And while there are many different ways to wear the trend, both Rita Ora and Taylor Hill showed us how it's done at this years VMAs.
Supermodel Taylor Hill went half-and-half with her look, wearing glitter on the inner corners of her eyelids, and a seriously bold smoky cat eye on the outer corners. She kept the rest of her look simple, showing off a natural complexion and glossy lips. Meanwhile, Rita Ora went for the ultimate gothic-glam look, wearing dark shadow on her upper lids and lower lash line, and further enhancing her eyes with black liner in her waterline and a swipe of mascara.
Bright eye makeup can be a tough look to pull off – but not when you're Hailee Steinfeld or Stella Maxwell. For their appearances at the 2016 VMAs, both beauties made the colours in their patterned outfits pop with eye shadow that matched. While Hailee took on subtle orange shadow and a matte complexion, Stella rocked a bright pink shadow on her upper lids and lower lash line.
One of our favourite hair trends this season? Texture! Whether it's voluminous and curly, crimped or permed '80s style, this season is anything but sleek. Ariana Grande attended last night's event wearing a half-crimped ponytail, showing off her own unique take on the trend. To get her look, simply pull your hair back into a high ponytail, wrap one strand from the ponytail around the base of your elastic, then crimp the top half of the ponytail and voila! A red carpet-approved look!
Just when you thought glitter roots were over, Holland Roden steps out onto the VMAs red carpet wearing an all-white jumpsuit and a head full of sparkles. Our tip for adopting the look? Follow Holland's example and opt for silver and gold sparkles on the middle half of your roots for a more subdued approach to the trend.
