Last night, the American Music Awards red carpet experienced downpour that may have had something to do with the night's most prominent beauty trend: Ponytails. Everyone from Selena Gomez to Ciara and L'Oreal muse Karlie Kloss adopted the classic style – in their own unique ways, of course.
From bouncy and carefree, to high and sleek, Get The Look has rounded up the different kinds of ponytails that dominated last night's AMA's red carpet, and explains how to achieve them for yourself!
AMAS 2016: PONYTAILS DOMINATE THE RED CARPET
While Selena Gomez may have adopted a bouncy, low ponytail – what you would expect for a carefree look – it was Ciara's lush mane that wins the award for "I-Woke-Up-Like-This." The expecting mother showed off her baby bump through a black and white long sleeved gown with a voluminous bottom half, and contrasted the glam and over-the-top ensemble with a carefree, slightly textured ponytail.
To create the carefree aspect of this look, Ciara left her bangs loose to hang around her face. To re-create this look, leave your hair natural – for that carefree effect – and start by creating a middle part that runs about 1-inch away from your hairline. This will ensure that the pieces created by the middle part are left loose to hang around your face. Use a comb to brush the rest of the hair back, then pull your lengths up to the middle of your head and secure with an elastic.
Spray texture spray into your ponytail and use your fingers to mess it up slightly. Finish off with hairspray and you're ready to go!
L'Oreal Paris muse and supermodel Karlie Kloss adopted a sleek, modern ponytail that sat atop her head and complemented her equally modern blue and black gown. To get this look, spray your hair with water (from a mist bottle), focusing on your roots and the top of your head. Use a tail comb to brush the hair to the back of your head, making sure that there are no flyaways. Pull your hair up on top of your head, then secure with an elastic. Use a flat iron to straighten the hair in your ponytail to create that super modern effect like Karlie's, then place a thick black ribbon around the elastic, and wrap it around the ponytail, bringing it down the length of the ponytail slightly. Finish off with a shine finish hairspray!
Selena Gomez had her own idea of a sleek ponytail, keeping the top of her hair straight and parted down the middle, while the ends were left voluminous and bouncy. To get this look, start by parting your hair down the middle with a tail comb. Spray a bit of hairspray onto the comb to get rid of any flyaways and keep that sleek effect. Pull your hair into a low ponytail that rests on your neck and secure with an elastic. Next, use a large barrel curling iron to curl large sections of hair within the ponytail, then finish off by working a volumizing spray into the ends with your fingers.
While we love all of the ponytail looks the night had to offer, no one could possibly top the queen of ponytails, Ariana Grande. Diverging away from a simple pulled back look, Grande added tiny braids at the crown for a twist.
To achieve this look, braid small sections of hair on each side of your head near your ears, and from the hairline in the direct centre of your head in an upward direction. Once you reach the top of your head with each braid, stop and secure the braids with a small elastic. Gather the rest of your hair into a high ponytail on the top of your head, then secure with an elastic. Use a flat iron to straighten out the hair within the ponytail, then take a small section of hair from the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic to conceal it!
