Onyx nails

Autumn nail trend: jewel tones

by Kathy Saunders -

Diamonds are a girl's best friend. Well, we're not that picky. If it's shiny and seems precious, we'll take it! Jewel-toned nails are expected to be a big trend for Autumn 2013 and it's one we're definitely in support of.

Jewels at your fingertips

Once Autumn rolls around, we tend to say "so long!" to the bright clothes in our wardrobe and, instead, rely heavily on neutrals (think: black, cream, and grey). One great way to sprinkle some color into your looks is by painting your nails in rich, vibrant jewel tones. We've been seeing black, oxblood, and amethyst pop up over and over on the runways, and emerald was Pantone's pick for the 2013 Color of the Year. You could even paint each of your nails a different tone for a real "treasure chest effect". Here are our favorite picks:

Onyx is a precious gemstone found in Brazil, Uruguay, Pakistan, and India. A super shiny black polish can make a bold statement and matches everything.

The color of blue sapphires can range from dark violet to purplish blue. Choose a shade in this spectrum for truly romantic nail art.

Ruby is said to bring good luck and protection. You can find these gorgeous gems in Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, and Sri Lanka. Bring yourself fortune by painting your nails ruby red.

The name "Amethyst" comes from Ancient Greece, where it was believed the stone could protect it's owner from drunkenness. We can't make any promises, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to try! Paint your nails purple and get ready to hit the town!

Will you be wearing jewel-toned nails this Autumn/Winter?
