It's pretty much common knowledge now that purple lipstick is a rival shade to red. Our favorite celebrities have been supporting the purple cause for some time now. But because the color is incredibly versatile, and comes in so many different shades, it's important to know what hue suits your outfit - and also what makeup looks to wear it with. On that note, here's our Purple Lipstick Beauty Dictionary, with some help from our favorite red carpet stars!
From Light to Dark
You shouldn't be afraid of wearing two bright colors in one look. Bright fuchsia lipstick can look fabulous with turquoise, for example. Why? Because purple is a secondary color, and turquoise is an analogous tertiary color. Basically, turquoise is next to purple on the color wheel. This rule is a good one for working out if your color scheme is a hit or miss!
Chanel's glossy lavender lip color looks both moisturizing and plumping. Not only does it match the color of her top, but it also makes a lovely contrast with her smoky eye makeup. If you're planning on coordinating your lips with your outfit, avoid throwing in too many other colors - you risk ending up looking more clown than cool.
Dark magenta is a popular shade among celebrities, and Lily Collins is no exception. While a red lip would have been too much of a cliché alongside her black lacy dress and sculpted curls -she'd have looked like a 1920s flapper- this unexpected purple hue brings her look right up to date.
Of course, if there's one celebrity we associate immediately with the dark lip, it's Lorde. Working the gothic look perfectly, Lorde enjoys the contrast that dark mauve shades have against her skin. The effect of the striking shade means she doesn't have to worry about her eye makeup, leaving the focus on the mouth, and the sound that comes from it!
Perhaps the darkest lip we've seen on the red carpet was that of Selena Gomez with this deep damson shade of purple. Capitalizing on the world's obsession with vampires and the dark side, she looked sultry (and just a little bit naughty) in a cut-out black dress and messy fishtail braid.
