First we saw talented makeup artists use Instagram to display works of classic art on faces. Then, we saw South Korean artist Dain Yoon use the social network to show off her ability to paint mind-bending, reality-defying scenes on her face to evoke the work of surrealist painters (and blend into her surroundings). Now, makeup artists, Instagrammers and beauty vloggers have gone back to basics with new challenges like the insane "100 layers of" makeup tutorials, for example, that required people to layer their faces with hundreds of layers of foundation, lipstick, mascara – you name it!
But like any, beauty lovers are on to the next trend, and it seems the all-over highlighter look is the next trend to have caught on, with #highlighterchallenge taking over our Instagram feeds this week.
The challenge is simple (well, not in execution) – use only highlighter to apply a full face of makeup. Sounds shiny, right? While we love a glistening, dewy or shiny face for the season, the #highlighterchallenge takes strobing to the next level, and the results are awe-worthy and mesmerizing to say the least!

#THEHIGHLIGHTERCHALLENGE: HOW TO ACHIEVE THE PERFECT AMOUNT OF SHINE
If you're a fan of the bright eyeliner makeup trend, incorporate highlighter into your look for a beauty match made in heaven. Start off by prepping your skin with L'Oreal's Lumi primer to create a shiny base. Next, apply an even layer of BB cream to further enhance that glow-y, dewy look, and follow up with a powder or liquid highlighter. The main areas to focus on when highlighting your skin? Cheekbones, bridge of nose, temples, chin (and neck if you're inspired by this iridescent look!). Finish off your colourful look by coating your lids with a coloured shadow, then line your waterline with an eyeliner in the same colour family.
This is one daring look that will have all eyes on you!

One of our favourite trends for fall 2016? Bold, metallic lips. If you're daring enough to try this all-over highlighted look, start by unifying your base as you normally would, then applying a light shade of powdered highlighter on your upper cheekbones, forehead, bridge of nose, and chin. Then use a darker shade of highlighter or shimmery bronzer to accentuate your lower cheekbones and apples of your cheeks, sides of nose, and jawline.
Make your lips match by coating them with two layers of a lipstick shade of your choice (metallic, if you have!). If you don't have a metallic or glossy lipstick, apply a heavy dose of highlighter onto the centre of your lips to make them appear more plump, and of course, metallic!
A NATURALLY HIGHLIGHTED LOOK
If you find yourself a little too afraid to try a daring all-over highlighter look like the two above, opt for a more natural glow. Unify your base with foundation as you would, then highlight only the areas that reflect the light - your cheekbone, bridge of nose, forehead, and chin. Compliment your strobed look with bronzer on your lower cheekbones and finish off with a classic red lip and swipe of mascara!
