We're all on the quest to access the fountain of youth – and in the beauty world, there are many creams, facials, and procedures to aid us on this mission. Yet on our complicated journey (sometimes successful, sometimes not) to find our inner youth, we often forget about the simplest steps – like the way we apply our makeup, which can have a great effect on how young (or old) you look, and sometimes, it's a very significant effect.
So take a break from your 12-product anti-aging routine and check out some of the most common, and most aging, makeup application mistakes, as well as our 5 easy tips to correct them for an infinite, youthful look.
MISTAKE: CHOOSING A LIPSTICK THAT IS TOO DARK
There's nothing better than glamming up an evening look with a dark oxblood lip colour or an electric red, but sometimes choosing a colour that's too dark for you can make your lips appear smaller, less plump, and less highlighting, adding age to your face. Instead, choose something in a mauve or pink tone (especially for the summer!). Adding a layer of gloss will also help plump up your lips and add fullness.
If you can't stay away from all the berry and wine hues that have become so popular lately, stay away from the formulas with a heavier texture of matte finish because it will stay flat on your lips. Opt for a sheer and hydrating formula or a lip stain.
MISTAKE: WEARING A FOUNDATION THAT DOESN'T MATCH YOUR SKIN COLOUR
While it's obvious that foundation should be matched perfectly to your skin tone, many women make the mistake of choosing a formula that is either too light or too dark for their skin. When you choose a shade that's too light, it makes your skin appear flat and lifeless. Instead of natural, it will look like the makeup is just sitting on your skin, which can add years to your face. But if you go too dark, you are not highlighting your features, but dragging them down and adding a dullness and heaviness that is just as bad as aging.
To avoid choosing the wrong colour foundation, test it on your neck, rather than on the inside of your arm, and don't blend it too much. Simply tap it on to achieve best results.
MISTAKE: ONLY LINING THE BOTTOM OF YOUR EYES WITH LINER
It may take longer to meticulously apply a stroke of liquid liner atop your lids, but it's a crucial part of ensuring you stay youthful and fresh. Though it may be easier to apply eyeliner only on the bottom of your eye, doing so will drag your features down and make your eyes appear smaller and your overall appearance seem older. Top eyeliner will open your eyes up and brighten your face. But be sure not to make the liner too thick, which can also be aging.
Pro tip: try to get the product as close to your lash line as possible, so it appears to be an extension of your eye lashes. Start at the outer corner and work your way in along the top lash, then do the same for the bottom. Connect the two lines at the corner of the eye.
MISTAKE: APPLYING BLUSH TOO LOW ON YOUR FACE
Blush may seem like an easy way to give your skin a flushed, youthful appearance, but applying the wrong shade on the wrong spot can easily add years to your skin. If you choose a brown coloured blush, you may wind up looking muddy, dull, and like the makeup is just sitting on your skin. And if you choose a product that is too soft in colour, it can wash you out and age you as well.
To find the right shade, pinch your cheeks and try to match the natural colour that you get when you blush. When applying, start at the height of the apple of your cheek and blend it up and back. Avoid applying blush on the bottom of the cheekbone, because you want to place it higher in order to define and lift your features.
MISTAKE: NOT DEFINING YOUR BROWS
Defining your brows may seem like nothing more than the latest in beauty trends, but it's actually an important step in anyone's beauty routine. As you get older, your eyebrows begin to thin out, so not filling them in with a pencil or brow powder can leave you looking washed out and older, while a full brow will lift the face, define your features, and create an overall youthful appearance.
When searching for a brow product, opt for ones that are the same shade as your hair. Start by brushing your brows up and over, then square the head of your brow off with the product and bring the colour through the arch, all the way to where your brow would naturally end.
And voila! You've found the fountain of youth in just 5 simple steps!
