Now that autumn has officially arrived, we're making some serious changes to our wardrobes and beauty routines. If you followed some of this summer's most coveted makeup trends, it's likely that you've spent the last few months trying to master the dewy look. Now, for fall 2016 we're setting our facial mists and illuminators aside in favour of loose powders and foundations that will help us achieve a perfectly matte complexion.
While a dewy complexion provides a healthy, youthful glow, matte is a classic, timeless look and a definite go-to when you're looking for that ultra glam look. But achieving a flawless matte complexion requires some essential products and a good technique. Inspired by models perfect skin at Etro's Spring 2017 runway show in Milan, Get The Look is helping you perfect the art of a matte complexion.
Here are 5 things you need to include in your beauty routine this season to achieve that photo-finish look.
5 WAYS TO ACHIEVE A MATTE COMPLEXION
DITCH THE MOISTURIZER BEFORE MAKEUP HABIT
When you wake up in the morning, there is often nothing better than hydrating your skin with a healthy dose of moisturizer (especially if you have naturally dry skin!). However, if you're looking to achieve a matte complexion for the day, avoid moisturizing right before applying makeup. Your foundation will be absorbed by excess cream, causing an uneven, glowy finish.
To avoid this, apply your moisturizer after washing your face, wait until it completely soaks into your skin, then apply your makeup for the day. Make sure your moisturizer is fully absorbed to avoid unevenness.
APPLY A BASE
In addition to covering up any unwanted redness or acne, foundation is used to create a perfectly smooth surface for the rest of your makeup. For a matte finish, choose a product that isn't enriched with iridescent pigments. Opt for a liquid foundation or primer that will provide a soft texture and flawless base.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT FOUNDATION FORMULA
The most important step in achieving a matte finish? Choosing the right foundation. Look for a mattifying formula that is non-comedogenic (or in other words, won't clog your pores). L'Oreal's Infallible Pro-Matte liquid foundation is a great option for getting the job done without feeling too cake-y. Apply it with a round brush or damp sponge.
SET YOUR MAKEUP
Setting, otherwise known as 'baking' your makeup, is one of the most important steps in achieving a matte complexion. After you've applied your foundation, apply a loose, translucent powder (pressed powder will not work the same!) onto your skin with a brush or damp sponge. Let the powder sit for about 10 minutes, then brush any excess powder away with a makeup brush.
SECURE WITH SETTING SPRAY
If you'd like to keep that matte finish for as long as possible, you'll need to set your makeup with a matte setting spray. Hold the product a few inches away from your face then spray it in the shape of an X for complete coverage.
