By now, you probably already know that glitter lips are the look of the season. Makeup artist Pat McGrath made them happen by covering models lips in red and gold glitter at runway shows like Versace, and now, they're here to stay (well, at least for the holiday season!) But amidst all the sparkle, a microtrend has emerged that's either more pared-back or out-there than the usual glitter lips, depending on how you wear it – we're talking glitter-lined lips.
The look started gaining traction earlier this year, but with the holidays upon us it's more relevant and wearable than ever before. What other time of the year can you rock glitter on just about every part of your face?
Ready to trade in your full-on glitter lips for something a little more subtle? Read on to find out 2 different ways to wear glitter-lined lips, along with what makeup looks complement them best!
BEAUTY TREND: GLITTER-LINED LIPS
ENTIRELY OUTLINED GLITTER-LIPS
If you're feeling daring with your sparkles this holiday season, try the entirely outlined version of the glitter-lined trend. The look is achieved by using a small makeup brush to apply glitter (in a colour of your choice) around the entire outline of your lips just as you would apply regular lip liner. As far as tackling the gilded look yourself goes, it's totally doable with time, patience and the right product, of course.
To get this look, dip an ultra-tapered brush into a cream glitter eye shadow (or a craft glitter formula, if you wish) and use it to outline your lips, placing focus on the cupids bow for a perfect outline. Finish of by applying a clear lip gloss onto your lips to subtly fill in the empty space without overriding your glittery look. Don't have a glittery cream shadow? To make things easier, try using a glitter eyeliner to trace your lips. Match your glossy glitter-lined lips with an equally glossy eye shadow look and you're ready to take on the holiday season in style!
CUPID'S BOW GLITTER LIPS
If the full-on lip liner look is a little too extra for your taste, there is another technique of the same kind that will allow you to wear the trend in a subtler way. Elegant, unexpected and subtle in equal parts, gold or silver-tipped cupid's bows consist of slashing pigment along the double curve of the upper lip as you would highlighter.
To get this look, apply your favourite shade of lipstick before anything else – red and glittery gold look great together and make the perfect holiday combination! – then use a metallic gold or silver lip gloss or liner and trace your Cupid's bow, over-lining slightly to keep the colour above the lipstick you've already applied.
Complement the look by applying shimmery gold eye shadow on your upper lids and lower lash line, then finish off with a touch of mascara!
