Most beauty trends tend to last a season or two before dropping out of style for a while. Not so for the classic "Cara" makeup look, by which we mean those big brown brows combined with a bold dark lip, which is still a favorite trend on the red carpet and runway. Why is this? What makes this such a popular and resilient trend? That's what we're about to explore...
The big brow is back
Postpone your next trip to the brow bar, and drop those tweezers. The big brow is your bff. Like most makeup trends, we've seen this one before: in the shape of Brooke Shields's unruly brows from the 1980s, and before that on Audrey Hepburn... and even Frida Kahlo!
It's all about embracing the 'natural', and rejecting any look that seems overworked (or even worked on at all). These days, if you look like you've spent more than five minutes on your makeup, you're not doing it right.
Worn with a dark lip
The big brow is usually accompanied by one of two makeup looks: the nude lip or the bold lip. The look we associate with Cara Delevingne is a sexy, deep red lipstick either applied for a smudged effect, or perfectly painted on to define the lip contours. Choose a shade that suits your skin tone, depending on whether you have warm- or cool-toned skin.
And the rest of the face?
The key to the classic "Cara" big brows and bold lip look is to leave it at that. Don't overcomplicate the look by adding a smoky eye, because you'll look overly made-up. A slick of eyeliner and mascara will be enough to bring out your eyes, and a matte complexion works best with a stand-out lip color.
