Brown lipstick isn't exactly new. The trend initially surfaced in the '90s on celebs like Drew Barrymore alongside a pale, porcelain complexion and white eye shadow (yes, that was a look). Luckily for us, brown lipstick has been re-invented since then to suit modern day makeup trends. And better yet, October is the perfect time to experiment with warm, chocolaty variations on the hue, as celebs like actress Priyanka Chopra and model Joan Smalls have recently demonstrated.
But like any makeup trend, if not worn correctly, brown lipstick can turn out to do just what it did back in the '90s – wash out your skin, – which isn't a look that we're willing to delve back into. So to help you pull off this warm, autumn makeup trend like a pro, Get The Look is offering you a few tips for pulling off the ultimate '90s beauty trend.
BROWN LIPSTICK: HOW TO PULL IT OFF
To avoid looking like you just stepped out of the '90s, update your brown lipstick by pairing it with an equally warm, glow-y complexion. Think liquid illuminators, highlighters and bronzing powder to achieve this look. Start off by unifying your base with a foundation that works best for your skin type. After you've achieved a flawless canvass, brush a small dose of bronzing powder onto your skin to create a healthy, sun-kissed glow that won't contrast too harshly against your lipstick.
Next, enhance the prominent parts of your face with a highlighting powder on your cheekbones, bridge of nose, chin and centre of forehead. If you're up for extra sculpting, apply contour onto the hollows of your cheeks, temples and hairline, and jawline.
When it comes to the eyes, keep the eye makeup minimal with the exception of a medium brown shadow and a touch of mascara. Brown shadow will compliment both your brown lipstick and sun-kissed complexion, enhancing that warm glow. Apply a medium (or dark – depending on your skin tone) brown shadow onto your upper lids, moving the colour up towards your brow bone and slightly past your outer corners into a cat-eye shape. Apply the same shadow underneath your lower lash line with an angled brush to create a shadow.
If you're going for a glam evening look, don't be afraid to play around with shimmery gold's in the corners of your eyes. Finish off by playing them up with mascara for everyday and liquid liner for a night out.
When choosing a brown lipstick formula, keep your complexion in mind. If you're going for a luminous, highlighted complexion, a matte formula will compliment your look beautifully. If you're going for a matte complexion, feel free to experiment with glossy shades of brown.
