The stars got emotional in L.A at Variety's 5th annual Power of Women luncheon, on October 4th. The event was wall-to-wall A-listers including, Kerry Washington , Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Hudson and Amy Poehler. The event aims to commend celebrity women for their charity work.
The commemorative ladies' event was as much about female bonding as it was about celebrating their philanthropy, but even amongst their cheers, they took time to remember why they do their work.
Amy Poehler might be known for her superb comic timing, but at the luncheon she moved the audience by evoking empathy, not joy, when she took to the podium and asked the crowd to close their eyes and remember a time they felt warm and safe.
"Open your eyes and realize that there are so many children in the world who have nothing," she said, as she began to cry. "They have nothing. They have no one who lights up the room and no clothes or safety or food. And so who are we to be in this room and be somebody living this life without helping them?".
She was discussing the organisation, Worldwide Orphans and her heartfelt question received applause.
Accepting the Power of Women's Lifetime Impact gong, Nicole Kidman exclaimed: "I became involved with this organization because I was raised by a feminist mother - and she said to never be frightened of using the 'F' word!"
Kerry Washington reminded the audience of the importance of arts education in poor areas, when she recalled crack pipe littered streets on her way to school.
Red lipstick and Hollywood curls were a favorite among the stars and Amy summed up their work in true comic style by declaring: "Remember, giving to charity is good for your skin, and makes your ass smaller!".
