The annual awards season kicked off rather early this year with the 22nd Critics' Choice Awards, which were held in Los Angeles last night. The glamorous night honours the best in film and television. Films like La La Land starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone took home awards, along with Manchester by the Sea and Jackie.
Guests in attendance included Amy Adams, Kerry Washington and Sarah Paulson, who took to either black or white ensembles. Standing out amongst them was Viola Davis, who donned a blue sequinned Michael Kors gown, and Hailee Steinfeld, who wore a multicoloured Jason Wu floral gown – who said you can't wear florals in the winter?
While last night's red carpet style was more subdued, it still managed to catch our eye – especially when paired with bold beauty looks that came in the form of burgundy and red lipsticks. Read on for the top trends on the red carpet!
What would a red carpet be without a little sheer? Stars like Haley Lu Richardson, Michelle Monaghan, and Naomie Harris adopted the sultry fabric as an add-on to their gowns, but it was Kerry Washington who stole our hearts in the sheer department. The Scandal actress opted for a black long-sleeved mini dress with a sheer neckline and sleeves adorned with black stars for a feminine, youthful yet sophisticated look.
BLACK & WHITE
Black and white reigned as the colours of the night, sometimes on their own and sometimes together. A-listers like Emma Stone, Naomie Harris, Kerry Washington, and Nicole Kidman donned black gowns adorned with everything from sequins to sheer and cool cut-outs. Meanwhile, Lily Collins, Sarah Paulson and Amy Adams leaned towards the other side of the spectrum, wearing elegant all-white ensembles.
Actress Michelle Williams opted for a mixture of the two, wearing a black and white floor-length gown adorned with sheer and subtle floral embellishments that complemented her platinum blonde hair!
Another red carpet favourite? Cut-out gowns. They can be sexy and subtle, providing an elegant and glam look. Nicole Kidman rocked a black off-the-shoulder gown with a triangle cut-out in the middle, meeting a thigh-high slit. Emma Stone on the other hand, opted for a black gown adorned with sequins at the top and two cut-outs at the sides for a subtly sultry look.
It may be winter, but that doesn't stop A-listers from bringing out the bright summery hues! Viola Davis donned an aqua coloured sequin gown, while Kaley Cuoco wore pale pink trousers paired with a matching pink ruffled top. The key to pulling off these summery hues in the winter? Go all out and match your eye shadow to your look!
This season, dark lipstick is more prominent than ever. And on last night's red carpet, it was equally as prominent on celebrities like Emma Stone and Nicole Kidman who rocked a classic and vibrant shade of red lipstick. Lily Collins, on the other hand, contrasted her white gown by pairing it with an oxblood coloured red lip that complemented her pale complexion and dark hair.
