Daring Makeup Trend: Giving red eyes a whole new meaning

by Paige Exell -

The one colour we bet you avoid when it comes to eye makeup is red. While most of us have donned a classic red lip at one point or another, the fiery shade is often associated with bloodshot eyes, and therefore avoided. Believe it or not, red eye shadow is actually one of the most gorgeous shades you can wear this holiday season – and not just because it's festive!

After the success of Fall's pink eye makeup trend, we're calling it: Red eyes will be one of the hottest looks for the 2016 holiday season.

In recent weeks, we've spotted the look on multiple celebs, but now, we're showing you how to rock the trend just in time for the holiday season!

EYE MAKEUP TREND: RED EYE SHADOW

PAIR IT WITH A RED LIP

It may seem like overkill, but pairing your red eye shadow with a matching red lip is the key to pulling off this look. It's all or nothing! The red eye, red lip combination will enhance all of your facial features in a bold way, and create the perfect festive look! Of course, red eye shadow looks great with a nude lip, but don't be afraid to go bold this season!

DON'T FORGET TO HIGHLIGHT

The key to rocking red shadow during the holiday season? Highlight, highlight, highlight! The festive red shadow paired with a shimmery highlighter or liquid illuminator placed on your cheekbones and bridge of nose makes for one stand-out look that incorporates the colours and sparkle that's associated with the holiday season!

GO ALL OUT

If you're rocking a red shadow, you want people to know it rather than appearing as though you didn't get enough sleep. Only applying a small amount of red shadow or liner may do this, so rather than a quick flick or a touch of red on your upper lid, apply your red shadow on your upper lids first with a fluffy brush, moving the colour up towards your brow bone and over your crease. Then, use an angled brush to apply the same shadow underneath your lower lash line to create a shadow. Don't forget to apply a dot of highlighter in your inner corners!

TRY A RED LINER FOR A SUBTLER LOOK

If you're not ready to do a full ruby eye, try a smudge of brick liner (just on the bottom) with brown and mauve eye shadow on the upper lids. This will give you the daring look without the commitment. Finish off with a touch of mascara for full lashes!

ADD SPARKLE

What would the holiday season be without a little sparkle? Instead of matte red shadow, opt for a glittery red shadow, instead. Apply it on your upper lids, in your inner corners, then down beneath your lower lash line. Create a cat eye on your upper lid using a black liquid liner, then line your inner water line on your lower lids with a black gel liner. Finish off with a touch of mascara on your upper and lower lashes and your holiday look is complete!

TRY TWO-TONES

Still aren't sure about adopting a full-on red eye look? Play around with colours and try a two-toned look, instead. Apply a cool shade of purple shadow underneath your lower lash line, then apply a red or rust orange on your upper lid to create a subtle contrast. Line your eyes with a black pencil liner then finish off with a touch of mascara and a highlight on your inner corners!
