When we talk about beauty, people often assume we're talking about cosmetics. While makeup is a great way to enhance and improve our natural features, the key to a great beauty look is to start with a perfected base (and we're not just talking about primers). You might not realize it, but the real preparation for your makeup look begins with your skincare routine!
So, what should you be doing to keep your skin happy and healthy? Read ahead...
The basics of skincare lie in three simple steps: cleanse, tone, and moisturize. You should do this twice a day.
Cleansing is key as it removes makeup and impurities from the pores, offering a clean, fresh feel, and perhaps more importantly, clear skin! One quick cleanse is not always guaranteed to remove every bit of makeup, however, so it's a good idea to use a makeup remover first and then follow that up with a good cleanser.
Toners have many different aims. Some are good for evening out the skin tone, some help to exfoliate the skin, and some offer an extra dose of moisture. Choose the one that's best for you, or rotate two different toners in your routine.
Finally, moisturize! Moisturizer helps the skin stay smooth and hydrated so never forget to moisturize after you've toned. You'll find that once your skin is clean and hydrated, your makeup routine becomes a much smoother process- literally! Foundation, BB and CC creams will apply more easily and offer a more natural finish.
Once you've developed a basic skincare routine, you may find that you want to add in extra steps. There are many different masks and serums on the market that aim to purify, exfoliate, and moisturize the skin. Just as with makeup, the more things you try, the better idea you'll have of what suits your skin best.
- Remember to always remove your makeup before going to sleep to avoid clogged pores.
- Always use a clean towel to dry your face after cleansing. Keep a towel near the sink that you use only for your face and after a few uses, give it a wash.
- It's also important to get a good amount of sleep and to maintain a balanced diet!
