Emmy Rossum's hair at the CFDA Awards: is crimping back?!

You'd better go get your bell-bottoms, because it looks like the 90s are back! Emmy Rossum is the latest celebrity to be spotted sporting a style we never thought we'd see again: crimped hair. It's been so long, in fact, that we'd forgotten all about its existence. But Emmy's given the 90s her own 2014 twist. Here's how:

The messy crimped braided crown

Crimp it!

The good news is that it doesn't matter if you threw out your crimping irons a decade ago (or if your mom threw out hers) because you don't actually need them. Simply braid (tightly) the section of hair you want to crimp, secure with a small elastic, and a) leave them in overnight or b) blow dry on a cool air setting for ten minutes. Remove the elastic and ruffle the hair loose with your fingertips.

Create it!

It looks like Emmy has crimped the front sections of her hair, before backcombing the rest - or just using a lot of volumizing mousse before drying - and creating a braided crown. This is how Emmy manages to take a Nineties trends and give it a fresh, modern twist (literally).

Update it!

We've been seeing all sorts of braided styles on the red carpet, and the braided crown is just one: there's also the messy fishtail, the braided bun, the plaited updo, the side braid... the list goes on!
