Eye Care: How to choose the right product according to your skin's needs

by Paige Exell -

If you're a woman who uses facial cleansers and creams, you've probably experienced the burning sensation around your eyes when experimenting with and using the wrong face creams. The skin around the eyes is thinner and a lot more sensitive than the skin on the rest of your face, meaning it needs unique care and special products. Being finer, it is also more susceptible to dehydration, swelling and wrinkles, which is why it's so important to use specific treatments when dealing with your eyes.

Whether you're 20 or 60, there's an eye cream or treatment that will suit your needs. Whether it's for anti-aging (you aren't too young to start!), dark circles or to simply firm the skin, we're offering you tips on choosing the eye products according to your skin's needs.

WHAT EYE CREAM FOR MY SPECIFIC NEEDS?

PUFFINESS

If you have puffy, swelled eyes, you're in luck because there are several ingredients that are recognized for their ability to reduce puffiness. Floral cornflower water, tea extracts, cucumber and cold water will all do the trick when your feeling more inflamed than usual. To treat puffiness when you wake, place two cotton balls soaked in micellar water (or cucumber!) over your eyes. Leave it on for about 3 to 5 minutes. Pro tip: let your eye care sit in the refrigerator. The cold product will active blood circulation and help reduce swelling.

DARK CIRCLES

Dark circles under the eyes are usually the result of unhealthy behaviours like lack of sleep, smoking, alcohol and poor diet consumption. However, some women have dark circles as a result of genetics and deeper set eyes. To help get rid of dark circles, opt for an eye treatment or cream that's enriched with ingredients like Vitamin K, caffeine and Diakalyte. An increase in your daily water consumption will also help to combat dark circles. If you want to do double duty, opt for a colour correcting concealer (red eliminates blue) under your eyes.

FINE LINES AND WRINKLES

Since the skin around the eyes is thinner and more prone to dehydration, it's usually one of the first areas on your face to reflect signs of aging. To treat fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, turn to a Pro-Xylan enriched product, a naturally occurring molecule that promotes hydration and has a hyaluronic acid, a substance that provides volume and elasticity to the skin. Collagen is also an effective ingredient in the fight against wrinkles and unwanted crow's feet. Apply your eye cream morning and night and don't forget that even if you're in your 20's, it isn't too late to start the anti-aging treatments!

FIRMNESS AND RADIANCE

With age, hormonal changes cause a loss of hydration, nutrients and natural oils. To feed mature skin, opt for an ingredient that is fortified with calcium and precious oils. In addition to hydrating the thin skin around the eyes, these ingredients will give it a smoother appearance and take down any swelling.
