Thanks to this year's Met Gala, we've been introduced and re-introduced to a few beauty trends that have been kept on the down-low for a few years now. The latest viral beauty trend to take over our faces? Eye-strobing – a classic technique that has been re-imagined to fit in with the rest of this year's viral beauty crazes (see: nontouring, cheek-strobing, and contouring).
To refresh your memory, the strobing technique refers to the act of applying mega amounts of highlighter where the sun naturally hits your face. That means, the bridge of your nose, centre of your forehead, tip of your chin, browbones, and cheekbones, resulting in a dewy, youthful glow.
Eye-strobing is the same concept, focusing on the inner corners of your eye. This technique is nothing new, as makeup artists have used this trick for years to make eyes appear bigger, brighter, and more awake. Yet thanks to celebrities who followed this years Manus x Machina Met Gala theme, the beauty hack was taken to another level, going along with the cyborg chic metallic looks on guests likeLara Stone and Rita Ora.
Want to learn how to take this trend from the red carpet to the streets? Get The Look shows you how eye-strobing is done in just a few, simple steps.
EYE-STROBING: GET THE LOOK
To achieve this highlighted look, start by prepping your skin with a liquid foundation. Continue the strobing trend on your cheeks by applying a powder or liquid highlighter to the bridge of your nose, top of your cheek bones, centre of your forehead, and chin. Create contrast by applying bronzing powder to your cheeks and temples.
When it comes to eye-strobing, the focus is on the inner corner of your eyes, meaning you are free to choose just about any colour eye shadow you please. For a more natural look, use a light, matte brown shadow on your eye lids. If you're feeling a little more drama, use a black or grey matte shadow, instead. Avoid shimmery eye shadows that will blend in with the white shimmer that coats your inner corners.
To begin the eye-strobing process, use a white eye shadow or white pencil eye liner with shimmer, and dab a fair amount onto the inner corners of your eyes with a shadow brush. Use the liner or shadow brush to coat the area underneath your lower lash line for double the affect. Finish off by applying a stroke of mascara to your upper and lower lashes.
Keep all eyes on your – you guessed it – eyes, by keeping lipstick to a minimum. Use a nude lip colour or gloss to coat your lips and keep them hydrated.
Congrats! You've learned how to master the latest in makeup trends!
