There are many misconceptions about fishnets. Most people like to think of them as the bottom half of a Halloween look, but judging by the latest street style looks, it's time to start thinking of them as part of your most fashionable fall wardrobe. This meshy material is back in fashion, and in more ways than you think!
After popping up in various collections during the last few runway seasons, fall 2016 runways like Max Mara, Jeremy Scott and Rodarte put in a final plea for the fishnet trend. Since then, celebrities like Kendall Jenner have adopted the trend as legwear, and unlike the fishnets of the past, this season, the airy material is being used for tops, dresses, skirts, socks and even underneath pants – all ideal for layering.
We know this edgy trend can be intimidating to some, so we're rounding up a few different ways to wear it!
FASHION TREND: FISHNETS
UNDER SKIRTS (OR PANTS)
The most obvious way to rock the fishnet trend is to wear them as you would pantyhose: Underneath skirts and dresses. For a more tasteful approach to this look, pair your fishnet stockings with a longer skirt or a structured blazer or coat. If you're in a more casual mood, pair them with a long, oversized sweater and sneakers for an edgier, more laidback look.
One of the newer ways we've seen celebs and street style stars wear fishnet stockings is underneath distressed jeans, and pulled up past the pant waist. Simply opt for a pair of super distressed denim, and layer your fishnet stockings underneath so that the mesh fabric shows through! This will add an edgy touch to your look.
If you're still unsure about this new trend and want to adopt it in a more subdued way, buy yourself a pair of fishnet socks. Fishnet socks can be worn underneath sneakers by day for a laidback approach, or underneath heels by night. They can even be paired with heels and a structured coat to turn your fishnets into a work appropriate fashion statement.
Opt for a pair of heels that have cool cut-outs or a lower cut, giving your fishnet socks their moment in the spotlight!
LAYERED UNDERNEATH TOPS
While we can't wear fishnets as tops, we can look for mesh, fishnet-like tops. Kourtney Kardashian was recently spotted wearing a long-sleeved, mesh turtle-neck top underneath a black slip dress for added edge. Try pairing a mesh top underneath a shirt with a plunging neckline if you aren't into dresses. You can also wear your mesh top overtop a unique bralette that never gets to see the light of day!
