Glamour Women of the Year Awards 2016: The best dressed women on the red carpet

In the midst of post-election turmoil, Glamour magazine celebrated its annual Women of the Year Awards last night in Hollywood, California, spotlighting a group of inspirational women. Some major celebrities stepped out in honour of the occasion, including recipients like Ashley Graham, who has helped to reshape the fashion industry, and Lena Dunham, who's become a major voice for feminism.

First and foremost, we acknowledge their hard work and their message, but we'd be lying if we said we didn't also applaud their standout looks, too. From shimmering, shining dresses to bold style statements, we're rounding up some of the most noteworthy trends on the red carpet – and the women who wore them.

Sheer has always been an easy way for celebrities to appear sultry and sophisticated on the red carpet. This year, Demi Lovato, Cara Delevingne and Ashley Graham all brought their own variations of sheer to the event. While Demi opted for a subtly sheer black and grey mini dress, Cara went for a black, floor-length sheer long-sleeve gown that gave her a gothic look. Ashley Graham took an entirely unique approach, wearing a white jumpsuit with sheer legs and beaded embellishments.

In a sea of bold hues, gothic sheers, and sultry red lips, was a softer, more romantic red carpet look: blush pink. Zendaya took over the red carpet wearing a white mini dress with soft pink 3D floral sleeves. Amber Heard took a similar approach, wearing a lace, off-the-shoulder gown in blush pink. She paired it with a bold red lip for the ultimate feminine touch. The most statement making of the blush looks on the red carpet? Gwen Stefani's blush pink Princess-cut tulle gown adorned with ruffles, cut-outs and a halter neckline. She complimented her gown with a soft blush makeup look that matched her icy blonde hair.

As of late, metallic has become one of fall/winter's must-try fashion – and beauty – trends. If you've already given metallic lips, nail polish or eye makeup a try, take a few tips from the celebs on last night's red carpet, and add it into your holiday season wardrobe, as well. Chanel Iman lit up the red carpet wearing a silver metallic cut-out gown with choker neckline. Actress Kat Graham had the same idea, wearing a silver metallic blouse-style dress with velvet accessories. Meanwhile, Tracee Ellis Ross gave metallic a whole new meaning, wearing a red metallic blouse-style gown that looked perfect next to her gold accessories.

While some celebs opted for soft colours and classic black and white ensembles, Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and Jenna Dewan Tatum brought life to the red carpet with their bold royal blue and neon green looks. Simone paired her bright blue and black gown with a grey, sparkling smoky eye that added just the right amount of glam to her look. Jenna, on the other hand, chose to enhance her eyes with thick, dramatic liner on her upper and lower lids and a pin-straight hairstyle that gave her a super modern look.
