Only when you're young is it socially acceptable to wear glitter on every part of your body – until now. The holiday season is already the best time of year to wear sequined dresses, glitter eye shadow and metallic shoes, but 2016 in particular has been the year to go full disco ball. We've seen metallic shadows, talked outlining your lips in metallic glitter liner, experimented with glitter lids, glitter lips, and even glitter roots. The next shimmery stand-out look to try? Hair Foiling.
Yes, hair foiling is the latest holiday hairstyle trend to take over our social media feeds. The next logical step from glitter roots, hair foiling involves sticking little flecks of foil onto your hair in little accent points. The foil flecks themselves can be purchased in gold, silver or copper – look for loose flakes or sheets of foil at your craft store, which you can break up or cut up to get the size you want.
When paired with Old Hollywood waves, we must admit, hair foiling looks pretty classy (and festive!) Feeling creative this holiday season? Read on to find out how you can re-create the look!
HAIR FOILING: STEP BY STEP STEP
1: CURL YOUR HAIR
To start off this look, part your hair over to one side to begin your 40s-inspired look. Next, use a large curling iron held horizontally and curl the ends of your hair in large sections. Once you've completed curling the ends of your hair, place the curling iron at the top of your head near the root (and near your forehead) and create a wave with volume at the top that will flow down onto your face. Complete the look by using your curling iron to create small finger waves around one side of your face.
STEP 2: ADD TEXTURE
To get the smooth texture, run a brush through your hair then apply hairspray to hold it in place. If you find your curls are too voluminous, you can use a gel or oil to smooth them out with your fingers, as well.
STEP 3: CHOOSE YOUR FOILING SPOT
Next, pick the area where you will apply the foil onto your hair. It looks great (and classy) placed above the ear on one side of the head. Choose the location the same way you'd place any other hair accessory.
STEP 4: APPLY THE FOIL
To allow the foil to stick, apply an excessive amount of sticky gel spray or hairspray onto the area where you will place the foil. Once you've broken your foils into your desired shapes and sizes, apply them in a random pattern on your hair. To hold them in place, use a small makeup brush to gently press them into the hair, then spray with hairspray all over again to set.
