This season, designers have been making a case for short bobs and edgy buzz cuts on the spring-summer 2016 runways, encouraging women to embrace the hairstyle and individual look that suits them best. But that doesn't mean we don't love a head full of long, natural beachy waves when swimsuit season rolls around.
Unfortunately for some (most of us), our hair just never seems to reach desired length no matter what we do. Realistically, there is no magical way to make your hair grow super long, super fast (besides hair extensions, which can often contribute to your short, thinning hair even more). Fortunately, there are ways to speed up the process by ensuring your hair is kept healthy and hydrated at all times.
So instead of simply lusting over celebrities amazing beach waves and long 'dos (we're looking at you, Blake Lively ), try these tips to help your hair grow out a little quicker for the summer!
One of the biggest mistakes you can make while trying to grow your hair out is not getting it trimmed. We know, we know: you are trying to avoid chopping off any length and promote hair growth, not vice versa. However, healthy hair grows faster and split ends can work their way up your strands, damaging hair and making it even shorter.
Shampoo takes all of the dirt and grime out of your hair and scalp, while conditioner replenishes nutrients that your hair needs to be healthy and shiny. So if you really need to skip a step, ditch the shampoo every now and then to keep your hair healthy and hydrated.
STEP AWAY FROM THE HEAT TOOLS
While most of us know that the burnt hair smell created by straighteners or curling irons isn't a good thing for long luscious locks, we often see styling as a must, and never actually get to see the positive effects that ditching these tools can have on our hair. To really get your hair growing, lay off the dryer, curling iron, and flat iron, and when you absolutely need it, use product like L'Oreal's thermal heat protective spray to shield your strands from harm.
EXFOLIATE YOUR SCALP
We tend to forget that like the skin, the scalp needs pampering and attention, too! Exfoliate your scalp once a week with the same exfoliate used on your face to remove excess oil, product residue, and dandruff.
USE A HAIR MASK ONCE PER WEEK
Encourage hair growth by keeping it healthy with a hair mask once per week. For best results, opt for a formula with natural products like coconut oil or castor oil. You can even place the individual oils directly on your ends to replenish, hydrate and get rid of split ends! Our suggestion: leave the treatment on overnight if possible, and rinse it out in the morning.
Scalp massages may feel utterly amazing, but they're even better for your hair. To promote hair growth, give yourself at-home scalp massages using the tips of your fingers. Massaging your head can stimulate the blood flow to your scalp, which helps nutrients get to your hair follicles more quickly. You can also give yourself a wet hair massage while in the shower, starting at the back of the neck and moving around the hairline. A perfect excuse to stay in the shower longer, if you ask us!
COLD WATER RINSE
Before stepping out of the shower, douse your hair in cold water for a few seconds – we know, it's cold, but beauty is pain! This will help seal your hair cuticles, and prevent moisture loss and heat damage. Alternatively, avoid using scalding hot water when washing your hair, as it can weaken your strands.
The hair needs nutrients to grow, so it's important to tailor your diet if you want long, luscious locks. Take an over-the-counter vitamin every day that contains antioxidant blends and Vitamin B derivatives to help increase hair strength. Supplements like biotin, found at basically any local pharmacy, encourage healthy hair and nail growth for double the effect!
The simplest, no-fuss way to keep your hair long and healthy? Brushing! The key is to brush the hair gently, starting from the bottom and working your way up to the roots to avoid breakage. Use a boar bristle brush, which releases natural oils and makes your hair appear shiny.
