While this season's hair trends are nothing we haven't seen before – braids, buns, beach-y waves – they've come to us in unique, modern ways with each style being transformed to cater to one of the hottest trends of the moment: futurism.
This year's Met Gala theme was Manus x Machina, bringing chic cyborgs and their otherworldly dates to the red carpet. The 2016 catwalks also nodded towards futurism with various displays of metallic, sequins, and glitter worn by models.
Now, the trend has made its way to our hair, with celebs and it-girls opting for futuristic versions of our favourite, classic looks. Need a little inspiration? Check out our top 5 futuristic hairstyles to try this summer (if you dare!)
THE SINGLE PONYTAIL BRAID
Like her character on Pretty Little Liars, Lucy Hale isn't afraid to experiment and express her individuality when it comes to fashion and beauty. For the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, the 27-year-old actress wore one futuristic braid down the middle of her head parting her hair on each side.
To get this look, section your hair off into three parts – the middle section being the smallest – and French braid the middle section as usual. At the end of the braid, combine the ends of the hair from each side of your head together, and secure with an elastic creating one ponytail at the nape of your neck.
THE DOUBLE CROWN BRAID
There are many different ways to wear a braid, whether it's down the middle of your head, boxer braids on each side, or in Miranda Kerr's case, two braids on each side of your head that form a crown and meet at the ends. For the Manus x Machina themed 2016 Met Gala, the supermodel kept with the theme, and created two braids on each side of her hair that followed her hair line past her ears, and connected at the end, creating the appearance of a Princess Leia-worthy crown!
THE STRUCTURED BUN
Buns are having a major moment in the spotlight as of late. Whether they're messy buns, low buns, top knot buns, or Cinderella-inspired buns, buns are the hairstyle of choice for spring-summer 2016. Unfortunately, creating the same old bun on your head can get a little boring, so what better way to spice up the look than to give it a futuristic twist?
To create a sleek, structured bun that stands up on its own, slick your hair back and secure it into a ponytail. Spray a tremendous amount of hairspray or mousse on the ponytail to make it stand up, and loop it through the elastic creating a bun that stands up on its own. This is one style that will never get boring!
If you're a daring chick and would rather opt for an entirely different hair colour, take note of Ciara's 2016 Met Gala look, where she made a splash on the red carpet with a futuristic shade of flashy silver hair. Remember to opt for a shade that gives you a modern, silvery look rather than a grey.
THE SHELL BUN
The shell bun is a look that resembles a sea-shell on the back of your head giving you a modern, yet sophisticated up-do, and after Dianna Agron successfully rocked the look, we're inspired to do the same! To get this look, pull your hair back into a ponytail, crimp the hair in the ponytail, then use bobby pins to pin it into a messy, shell-like structure however you please. Don't forget to finish with hairspray!
