Hair Tutorial: Nicole Kidman's braided bun

Hair Tutorial: Nicole Kidman's braided bun

by Paige Exell -

On December 19th, Nicole Kidman made her way overseas for the premiere of the film Lion, one of the most highly anticipated productions of the year. The film is based on a true story and co-stars actress Dev Patel and Rooney Mara. Although her co-stars were absent during the first Australian premiere, Nicole Kidman's presence was enough style to go around!

For the glamorous occasion, Nicole wore an elegant powder blue gown adorned with lace, floral embroidery and a high collar. To accompany her unique look, she pulled her hair back into a braided bun that was just as romantic as her ensemble – not to mention – a beauty trend you'll be seeing a lot more of in 2017!

Want to learn how to re-create the hairstyle before the new year hits? Read our step-by-step tutorial to find out!

NICOLE KIDMAN'S BRAIDED BUN, STEP-BY-STEP

Note that this hairstyle will be much easier to achieve on day-two hair that isn't squeaky clean!

STEP 1

Start this look off by using a flat iron to straighten your hair. Before straightening it, remember to apply a heat protective spray to avoid damage. If your hair is thick, divide it into two sections at the top and bottom of your head before ironing it out.

STEP 2

Once your hair is perfectly straight and sleek, grab a comb and pull it up into a ponytail that sits on top of your head. Before securing with an elastic, pull 2-3-centimetre-wide strands out to sit next to your ears. Use the flat iron to straighten them out.

STEP 3

With a gel or hairspray, smooth out the top of your hair to eliminate frizz and flyaways. Use your comb for assistance!

STEP 4

Spray your ponytail with a volumzing hair spray to add texture – use your comb to rough up the ends. Divide your ponytail into two sections, then braid each one of the sections. Secure with transparent elastics.

STEP 5

Wrap the first braid around the base of the ponytail to create the shape of a bun. Then, in the opposite direction, wrap the second braid in the same fashion. Use bobby pins to hold your hairstyle in place. Finish off with a generous amount of hairspray to ensure your look stays put all night long!
