For as long as we've known it, the classic top-knot has been used almost solely for hiding bad hair days and I-didn't-have-time-to-wash days with style. But in recent seasons, the top knot has found its way onto red carpets and runways, giving us all the more reason to adopt this cool, lazy-girl style.
Our latest top-knot inspiration? Talented singer Ciara, who was spotted rocking the look while accompanying her new husband Russell Wilson at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Sports Awards on Thursday July 14th.
A far cry from the three-piece suits and gowns we're used to seeing on red carpets, the two lovebirds made a statement wearing casual jeans, sneakers, bomber jackets. Ciara paired her look with two top-knots that sat on top of her head, giving her the ultimate casual, cool-girl look.
Want to try her look this summer? Follow our 4 simple steps!
STEP 1: ADD TEXTURE
Start off Ciara's cool-girl hairstyle by adding texture to your locks with a texturizing volume-boosting spray. After spraying your hair with the formula, gently scrunch the hair with your fingers for a slightly tousled look.
STEP 2: CURL
To keep her look effortlessly cool, Ciara strayed away from a completely smooth, sleek style and opted for a subtle curl on the ends of her hair. Using a flat iron, create slight waves and edges by twisting your wrists back and forth near the ends of your hair. Run your fingers through the ends to break up the curls, giving them an edgier appeal.
STEP 3: CREATE KNOTS
To create the main attraction of this style (AKA the top-knots), start by parting your hair down the middle with a fine tooth comb. Grab a section of hair on one side of your head just above your ears, and pull it back into a tight loop, leaving a small portion of hair sticking out from the elastic. Repeat on the other side of your head, making sure to create a tight loop high on your head. Using the excess hair sticking out from the elastic and loop, wrap it around the base of the elastic and secure with bobby pins.
STEP 4: ENSURE A LOOK THAT LASTS
After creating both top-knots on top of your head, apply a light coat of hairspray all over to keep the style in place.
