Hairstyle tutorial: Nina Dobrev's messy fishtail braid

We don't know about you, but we're pretty jealous of Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev's thick, glossy hair- mostly because the actress is always rocking such enviable hairstyles! From big, voluminous curls to a sculpted faux-hawk, Nina's hair is always right on-trend.

And for her latest look? Nina stunned with a highly textured fishtail braid that perfectly showcased her new ombre hair. Perfection! Granted, Nina doesn't actually need a show-stopping hairstyle to look great, but we're still pretty smitten with the style, and the best part? You don't need your own stylist to get the look! Here's how to copy this messy braid...

Get the Look

Step one: This look works best with hair that isn't freshly washed as there's a bit more grip to "dirty" hair, making it easier to achieve that naturally unkempt look. Freshen up your roots by spritzing a dry shampoo near the scalp and letting it settle in. Then, spray seasalt throughout your hair and use your fingers to ruffle the hair up a bit for natural texture.

Step two: Part your hair on your favorite side and then sweep all of your hair over one shoulder.

Step three: Take a small section of hair at the front and twist it along the side, toward the back. Once you've reached the back of your head, combine all of your hair and braid it using the fishtail technique.

To do this, split the hair you're going to braid into two halves. Take a small section from behind one half, pull it over the top and tuck it under the opposite side. Do the same on the other side and repeat all the way down. This can feel a little clumsy at first but you'll get the hang of it with some practice!

Top tip: You might find it easier to loosely secure the hair into a side pony before you start. This will hold the hair in place while you braid, then all you have to do is take the elastic off and use it to tie the ends once you're done.

Step four: Pull each side of the braid outward with your hands to create a loose, messy look, and pin back any major sections of hair that have fallen out with bobby pins.

Step five: Mist your style all over with hairspray to finish.

There you have it!
