Today, Madonna celebrates her 58th birthday, and enters the fourth decade of her phenomenal musical career that began when The Material Girl arrived in New York with just $35.00 in her pocket in 1978. The Queen of Pop made a name for herself by pushing the boundaries of pop music through lyrics, imagery, costumes, and out-of-this-world beauty looks, and continues to be a musical maverick to this day.
Madonna's perseverance in continuing what she started proves that age is simply a number, and just because today marks her 58th birthday, that doesn't mean the Queen of Pop is about to slow down – or start acting her own age. In fact, the older she gets the more outrageous her fashion and beauty looks seem to get. Her outfits are more revealing, her stage shows are more provocative, and she isn't afraid to take risks when it comes to hair and makeup – and we love it!
So, as Madonna clocks in for another year as Queen of Pop, we celebrate her 58th birthday with some of her most iconic (and most outrageous) fashion and beauty looks of all time.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MADONNA! HER 10 MOST ICONIC FASHION AND BEAUTY LOOKS
Leave it to Madonna to pull off just about any beauty look there is. Whether it's brown hair, long hair, short hair, curly hair, or platinum blonde hair, Madonna's pulled it off. For the 1990 'Blonde Ambition' tour, Madonna wore her infamous lingerie-inspired stage wardrobe, complete with the now iconic Jean Paul Gaultier cone bustier.
She matched her eye shadow to her champagne coloured costume, opting for a shimmery shade of white/gold on her lids that was accentuated by a swoosh of black liner and dark, thick brows. And while most would choose either dramatic eyes or lips, Madonna went heavy on both (because she can, of course), and paired her glam eye makeup with a heavy matte red lip. Meanwhile, her platinum blonde hair was pulled up into a high ponytail and completed with a double braid that wrapped around the base of the ponytail.
Inspired by Madonna's 'Blonde Ambition' hair? To get the look, simply pull your hair up and back into a high ponytail, using a comb and hairspray to ensure a flawless base. If your hair isn't naturally straight, use a flat iron to straighten out the hair in the ponytail, making sure to prep it beforehand with a heat protective spray. Next, take a strand of hair from the ponytail and braid it, then do the same with a strand on the other side of the ponytail. Wrap the first braid around the base of the ponytail, and then the second one, placing it just slightly on top of the first for the double effect.
This season, designers and celebrities have showed a sense of major nostalgia for the late '80s and '90s, showing off everything from brown lipstick to chokers and even crimped hair. But believe it or not, Madonna was one of the young originators of these looks in the late 1980's. The Queen of Pop was spotted back in 1988, wearing one of 2016's favourite makeup trends: brown lips, pale skin, and minimal eye makeup. To top it all off, the Material Girl rocked a head full of brown hair, making her pale skin even more prominent, not to mention, proving she can pull off just about any hair colour.
Celebrate Madonna today by ditching the bronzer, keeping it au natural on the complexion and eyes, and finishing things off with a glossy shade of brown lipstick.
LONG, MODERN LOCKS
She may be turning 58, but Madonna still knows how to wow an audience when it comes to fashion and beauty – she may even be more scandalous with her looks than some younger celebs of our generation! Take the 2016 Met Gala, for example. Madonna made headlines as a result of the Manus x Machina themed event, thanks to her scandalous knee-high boots and sheer Givenchy bodysuit that left little to the imagination. The singer wore her hair long and subtly curly, finishing off her look with an embroidered hair accessory and a classic red lip.
Later on, for her performance at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, the Pop Queen wore a luminous lilac Gucci brocade suit that she complimented with long, curly locks and a killer cat-eye.
We can't wait to see what she has in store for her 60th birthday!
