The holidays are here and, chances are, you're looking for a show-stopping hairstyle that you can be happy to immortalize in family photos. While leaving your hair loose is always an option, nothing really draws attention (and praise!) like a gorgeous updo. That's why we're taking inspiration from these romantic fishtail milkmaid braids from the runway!
All about the look
If you already know what fishtail milkmaid braids are then you can officially call yourself a hairstyle expert! If not, we can explain: the famous fishtail braid is a two-strand variation of your standard 3-strand braid and has become synonymous with boho-chic style thanks to stars like Vanessa Hudgens and Sienna Miller. Milkmaid braids, on the other hand, are created by taking any type of braid and wrapping it around the head to create a glamorous updo. Together, they are not only totally on-trend, they're downright unforgettable!
Get the look
It's best to start this look with hair that isn't freshly washed, but if your locks are dripping wet as you read this, don't fret: dry your hair as usual and then spritz texturizing spray throughout. Now, use a tail comb to divide your hair, working from the left side at the front and finishing at the center by the time you reach the back. Secure the right side with a clip.
Start your first fishtail: split the hair in half and take a small section of hair from the left side. Take the hair over the left side and under the right. Now, take a section from the right side and incorporate it into the left section. Do this until you reach the ends of the hair, keeping the braid tight as you go. Secure the hair with an elastic tie. Use your fingers to gently tug on each side of the braid, giving it a little more volume. Now, repeat the whole process on the right side.
If you have sideswept bangs, sweep them over to the right. Now, grab the left braid and place it over the top of your head, securing it above the right ear. Insert several more pins along the way to keep the braid in place. Now do the same with the right side, making sure not to overlap the first braid, but place it just next to it. Secure with more bobby pins.
Generously mist your hairstyle with a strong-hold hairspray. If you want some boho-chic texture, feel free to pull some face-framing sections loose!
