How to create a messy bun hairstyle

by Kathy Saunders -

One of the easiest high-impact looks you can create in a matter of minutes is a messy bun hairstyle.

You will need:

- Hairspray

- A comb or brush

- A hair elastic

- Bobby pins

Step one

Begin by brushing your hair out before pulling it back into a high ponytail and securing with a hair elastic.

Step two

Spritz your ponytail liberally with hairspray and then tease or backcomb it to add extra volume. You should end up with a ponytail that looks more like a hair explosion on top of your head. If it's neat and tidy, you're doing it wrong.

Step three

Split the pony in two and wind both sections around in a circle - so they kind of chase each other - to create the bun shape. Secure with hair pins and apply a little more hairspray when you're confident the bun is going to stay put.

For a final messy flourish, tease the hair on the top of your head (the bit pulled tight stretching back from your forehead) with your fingers to get a truly unkempt look.
