On Sunday evening, September 14, Alexa Chung stole all of the attention from the runway as she sat front row at the Topshop Unique show! While her flirty lemon and leopard print ensemble was to die for, we couldn't help but notice her unexpected school-girl pigtails. We definitely didn't see this style as one to watch, but there's no doubt this look will be hitting the street soon enough now that it's gotten cool-girl Alexa's seal of approval!
About the trend
Apparently, pigtails are a thing again. It's taken almost 15 years for this hairstyle to resurface- think Britney Spears and Baby Spice circa 1997. From the runways of Paris, to the streets of London, cute matching tails from under your ears are experiencing some serious grown-up treatment.
The key to making this trend work is to look further back than the '90s- ideally to the 1960s when bombshells such as Brigitte Bardot and Claudia Cardinale were at the helm of their career. Back then, it was all about volume, matte texture and plenty of backcombing to master pigtails that were far removed from the popular playground go-to.
Get the Look
Step 1: Apply heat-protecting serum to your locks and then blow dry straight. If you're after a more tousled finish, apply mousse to the mid-lengths and ends to emphasise your natural curl.
Step 2: Part your hair down the middle and work either side into a braid that rests over your ear.
Step 3: Once you've finished the braids secure the hair in place with hair ties.
Step 4: Lastly, pull out fine sections from the plaits to recreate Alexa's undone look.
Step 5: For extra style points, tie a cute ribbon over each of the hair ties. Then, mist with extra-strength hairspray for added shine and hold.
