Tousled side braid for summer

Long hair inspiration: 3 low-key summer hairstyles

As the weather gets warmer, we tend to just throw our hair up into a ponytail or casual topknot each day (something about the relationship between easy-going summer looks and a complicated updo feels wrong for us).

However, keeping a few alternative summer hairstyles up your sleeve can keep your looks fresh and fun all season. We've handpicked three low-key looks that are easy to style and appropriate for just about any occasion! Scroll through to get inspired...

Tousled side braid

With the rise in popularity of sea salt spray and Blake Lively-esque beach waves, the tousled texture with matte finish is seriously on-trend. This is a great way to give a regular side braid that beachy feel, even if you aren't anywhere near the sea!

To style: Apply a sea salt spray to damp locks and blow dry your hair while scrunching it up and twisting it randomly throughout. Use a comb to sweep everything over to one side and then divide your hair into three uneven sections. Loosely braid to the ends and then secure with a hair tie. To loosen the look even more, pull gently on each side of the braid.

Tousled pony

Update your regular ponytail by giving it some tousled texture this summer. It'll still do all the practical things you want it to, like keeping your hair off your face and helping your neck stay cool, but will just look a little fresher.

To style: Again, spritz with sea salt spray andblow dry, then tie the hair back into a ponytail. Take a section of hair from the tail and wrap it around the base of the ponytail to conceal the hair tie. Use your fingertips to loosen the hair on top and fix with hairspray.

Half-up waves

Another gorgeous summer, a half-up wavy style is perfect for warm weather, and this one shows off your glossy locks!

To style: First you need to make some waves, either with a wave-creating cream or a medium curling iron. Then, take a section of hair from each side of your head and twist them inward, joining them at the back with a small hair tie. Fix with a mist of hairspray and you're good to go.

Stay cool! And don't forget the SPF!
