Makeup for teens: a natural, back-to-school look inspired by Maddie Ziegler

by Paige Exell -

With adolescence comes new responsibilities and privileges, and among them, is being able to incorporate makeup into your daily routine – especially for that back-to-school season. And while the classroom may not call for a heavily contoured jawline and bold smoky eye, a subtle hint of blush, mascara and gloss is all you need to enhance your features and express your girl-ish side. In fact, keeping it low-key when it comes to makeup is recommended for young teens, so make sure to keep things light when it comes to colour and application techniques.

Need a little inspiration? Take it from the young Dance Moms star Maddie Ziegler, who has recently grown into a young teenager, perfecting the art of a subtle makeup look somewhere along the way.

MAKEUP FOR TEENS: A NATURAL LOOK FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL SEASON

COMPLEXION

When puberty hits, your skin is likely to undergo a few changes. Among them are oily skin, and as a result, acne and other unwanted breakouts. So, to avoid clogging your pores, choose a foundation that is "non-comedogenic" in order to let your skin breathe and prevent breakouts. For a bright, natural look like Maddie's, go for a BB cream or tinted moisturizer rather than heavy foundation.

Then, add a youthful glow to your complexion by gently covering the apples of your cheeks with a light pink blush!

EYES

To achieve the perfect age appropriate eye makeup look, all you need is a little mascara and a touch of shimmery white shadow. To start, coat the inner corners of your lids with the white shadow to brighten and open up the eye. Then, create the perfect doll lashes by coating your upper and lower lashes with a black volumizing mascara, moving your hand in a side to side motion from root to tip to avoid clumping.

LIPS

To keep that subtle look going, opt for a soft, feminine colour on your lips to balance out the rest of your look. During teenage years, a glossy shade of light pink is the perfect way to go. It's feminine, bright, youthful, and will match your pink cheeks, bringing your look together. For a natural glow, choose a colour that is only one or two shades off from your natural lip colour.
