Makeup Tips: 5 summer makeup hacks for wearing less in the heat

by Paige Exell -

When temperatures rise, we tend to look for ways to simplify our beauty routines in the name of already sun-kissed skin and preventing makeup from sweating down our faces. But while we love the idea of making things easier, it's not always as simple as cleaning out our cosmetic bags (who wants to get rid of all their makeup for one season?).

To simplify your beauty routine for summer, and keep things light when you're headed to the beach or hanging out by the pool, the trick is to modify your original beauty routine using the same products – and learn some killer techniques.

So, to help you cut your morning prep in half for the summer season, we've come up with a few tips and shortcuts to help you achieve your signature beauty look faster and with lighter layers.

APPLY FOUNDATION WITH A DAMP SPONGE

Piling on full, thick layers of foundation feels heavy and looks obvious, especially in the sunlight. To achieve super-even, flawless skin without all that product, the trick is to apply sheer layers until you achieve your desired level of coverage. Dot foundation in the centre of your face, and then blend it out with a damp sponge to remove excess product and buff the product into your skin creating an invisible look.

MIX CONCEALER WITH MOISTURIZER

Ditching the heavy foundation and concealer is always an option when your skin is already covered with a glowing, sun-kissed tan. But sometimes, we just can't avoid waking up with dark circles under our eyes that need immediate covering up.

The key to hiding discolouration without packing on the concealer is to dilute it with a bit of moisturizer. Simply place a bit of concealer and moisturizer on the back of your hand and mix them together creating one formula. Blend the mixture into your skin as normally, and you're set!

USE A CHUBBY EYELINER PENCIL

If you're a fan of the smoky eye and can't imagine letting it go just to achieve a lighter makeup routine, you're in luck, because believe it or not, you don't need an eye shadow palette to get a sexy, smudgy look. Rather than packing on the product, opt for a thick eye liner pencil, and concentrate the colour near your lash line. Use your finger or a brush to brush it over your lids, creating a one-step smoky eye.

USE BROWN MASCARA ON YOUR BROWS

If there's no need to fill in your brows, it's best to avoid the overly done-up look come summer. To simply define your brows without heavy brow products, use a brown mascara that matches your hair colour, and allows you to multitask. Brown mascara will thicken your arches, add colour and keep hairs in place.

LAYER TWO DIFFERENT MASCARA FORMULAS

When it comes to eyelashes, the goal is always to make them appear fuller and longer than they are naturally. And while many women look to false lashes to achieve this, there is a fuss-free summer solution to avoiding falsies while creating a fuller look. Simply layer two different mascara formulas over one another, like a thickening and lengthening combo, to pump up your fringe without extensions.
