Kim Kardashian at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival: 5 different ways to apply highlighter

Makeup tips: 5 ways to use highlighter

by Paige Exell -

With spring-summer, comes the glowing, luminous look that we all aspire to re-create. And with the term "strobing" that has recently entered our beauty vocabulary (or in other words, highlighting), the look is now easier than ever to reproduce. This glowing look, seen on various celebs at this year's Cannes Film Festival, gives off a youthful glow that brightens the complexion and allows your skin to radiate in the sunlight.

And while there are many different highlighting products that allow us to re-create the look (see: powder, liquids, you name it), only few are familiar with the different ways of using highlighter.

So, it's time to look past our cheekbones, and learn how to use highlighter on the rest of our faces.

ON YOUR CHEEKBONES

The high points of the cheekbones are the most common place that people tend to apply highlighter. Highlight on the cheekbones is often also accompanied by a touch of blush on the apples of the cheeks, or bronzing powder for a more contoured effect. To apply highlighter to the cheekbones, use a brush to gently sweep the formula across high point of the bone. For a particularly appealing look, use a matte formula that will make your highlight stand out amongst the crowd.

IN THE CORNERS OF YOUR EYES

Otherwise known as "eye-strobing," highlighter can be placed in the corner of your eyes to brighten your eyes, open them up and make them appear larger and further apart. Use a shadow brush to gently apply highlighter in both inner corners of your eyes. For a full effect, use the same brush to apply a line of highlighter down the bridge of your nose.

ON THE LIPS

While you may be thinking, "why would I need to apply highlighter on my lips?" a small amount of highlighting powder applied on your cupid's bow will give the appearance of larger, fuller lips and enhance the colour of your lipstick.

ALONG YOUR NOSE

The purpose of highlighter is to apply it where the sun would naturally shed light onto your complexion. The bridge of your nose happens to be one of these places, so to define this area, apply a small a stroke of highlighter along the edge, while darkening the two sides of your nose with bronzer to make your nose appear thinner and smaller.

UNDER YOUR BROWS

To make your eyes appear larger, and your brows more defined, place a stroke of pencil highlighter just underneath your brow, on your brow bone. Smudge the highlight into your skin for a look that will create a flawless contrast against a darker eye or shadow.
