Makeup Tips: how to fake false lashes

by Paige Exell -

While everybody longs for a full pout and perfectly defined cheekbones, nothing beats a beautiful set of long, winged lashes. But unfortunately, since most of us most definitely do not wake up like that, we look to volumizing mascaras and faux fringes to do the trick. Sure, falsies may come in handy from time to time, but applying strips or flares requires a certain amount of dexterity, patience, and time – all areas in which many of us fall short.

The good news? With the right techniques, mascara can give you all the lushness of fake lashes without the time and hassle – and that's where we come in! Get The Look is giving you 4 tips for achieving doll-like lashes. So, arm yourself with your favourite mascara and read on to achieve the full, fluttery lashes of your dreams!

HOW TO FAKE FALSE EYELASHES

PERFECT YOUR TECHNIQUE

Swiping on mascara may seem like a quick and easy task, but believe it or not, achieving the perfect winged effect requires a certain technique. The first step: Apply a coat of mascara to your outer corners only. To get as close to the roots of your lashes as possible, gently pull up the skin near your brow bone to slightly lift the lashes. After, go over the entire lash line with the wand. Use a formula with a curved wand to lift the lashes and hold the shape in place.

BRUSH BACK AND FORTH

To achieve fullproof wings, reach for a wand like L'Oreal's Telescopic Mascara that won't pull out a ton of product, so that you can achieve full lashes without clumps. Then, keep your lashes curled longer by wiggling the brush back and forth at the base of your lashes, and then swiping to the tips.

If you coat your lashes evenly, it will weigh down the tips of the hairs, causing your lashes to straighten out after a few minutes. The best way to hold a curl is to apply a thicker coat of mascara at the root of your lashes and a lighter one toward the ends. You can achieve this by wiggling the wand back and forth at the base, and then lightly combing through to the tips.

LEARN HOW TO HOLD YOUR BRUSH

The way you hold the brush when applying your mascara can make a huge difference. If you want thick, voluminous lashes, hold your brush at a horizontal angle and wiggle it back and forth. Turn the wand vertically and run the tip of the brush along the length of your lashes for a longer, more natural finish.

LAYER IT

Layer waterproof mascara on top of your regular formula to make your mascara last longer and make it easier to remove at the end of the day. Waterproof formula is great at holding curl and keeping your mascara from smearing throughout the day, but because it's so difficult to remove, try applying your normal mascara first and finishing with a coat of waterproof.
