Makeup Tips: How to fix your worst makeup mistakes

by Paige Exell -

No matter how focused we are when attempting to meticulously line our lids with liquid liner, or no matter how perfectly we lined our lips before layering on the lipstick, makeup application doesn't always go as planned and comes with numerous (yet reversible) mistakes – especially when we're testing out new products.

Unfortunately, we aren't always in a position to take off our full face of makeup and start from scratch (especially when we're dealing with quick bathroom touch-ups on a date!). Luckily, there are ways to tweak your existing makeup without taking it all off!

Check out some of the most annoying mistakes you can make while applying makeup, and how to fix them without a fuss!

IF YOU OVER-POWDERED YOUR FACE...

If you've applied a little too much bronzer, foundation, or other powdered beauty product on your face, reach for a mist – be it water from a bottle or a spray can. Cup your hands over your eyes as you spray, making sure not to remove or smudge your eye makeup. Once your face is damp, take a tissue and blot away the excess – or you'll end up with a caked face of makeup.

IF YOUR DARK LIPSTICK WON'T COME OFF...

If you decided to be daring and opt for a dark shade of lipstick, and later chickened out or changed your mind, first, try soaking a cotton ball in makeup remover or coconut oil and press it over your lips to break up the pigment. If you aren't at home, you can also apply a lighter lipstick then wipe it off to take off some of the darker pigment as well.

IF YOU OVERDREW YOUR EYEBROWS...

It's perfectly normal to get a little too excited about creating brows that are on point, even if it means over-drawing them. Luckily, you can fix it easily by taking a clean spoolie and dipping it in makeup remover. Work it through your brows in an upward, shimmying motion. Warm water will also work if makeup remover isn't an option.

Avoid reaching for an oil, this will cause all of the pigment to melt down your face, ruining your perfectly unified skin.

IF YOU OVERDREW YOUR CAT EYE...

Overdrawing a cat eye is one of the most common beauty mistakes. As you try to perfect the lines and make each side equal to the other, most of the time, you end up with thick, scary looking top lids. To reverse this mistake, soak a Q-tip in eye cream instead of makeup remover to erase your work. This will moisturize the eye instead of drying it out, which will make it easier to reapply any shadow that may come off in the removal process.

IF YOU APPLIED TOO MUCH BRONZER...

It's summer time, meaning we're all trying to get the most natural-looking sun-kissed skin – even it means applying a little too much bronzer. If you went a little too heavy on the bronzing powder, take a sponge with some concealer on it and buff out the pigment. Or, if you'd prefer a matte look, grab a fluffy brush and swipe on some translucent powder which will tone down the colour without removing it!
