Makeup Tips: How to tell if you're wearing the right foundation

by Paige Exell -

Finding the right foundation isn't always easy. There's a plethora of different textures, colours, and formulas that can seem overwhelming when browsing through the beauty shelves. But once you find a product that works for you, it's like you've found the one.

When shopping for a new foundation, it's important to keep your skin type in mind. There are some formulas that work best on dry skin, and some that are better for oily skin. So first and foremost, you need to figure out your skin type before you decide which foundation is right for you.

If you think you've already found the one, how can you tell if it's right? Get The Look is here to help you figure out if the foundation you're currently using is right for you! Here's how: if you answer yes to the following, your fave formula is probably the perfect match!

WORKS IN NATURAL DAYLIGHT

If you want to get the right tone, always try foundation in natural daylight. Try doing your makeup by a window or step outside after application. Daylight is crystal clear and even, which means it will be easier to detect the wrong colour match or spots that need more blending.

MATCHES THE CENTRE OF YOUR FACE, JAWLINE, AND NECK

The centre of the face is often the area women need most coverage. But just as importantly, you need to make sure it matches the rest of your body because a two-toned situation is a major no-no. Your neck makes for a great tester palette because it's typically even toned to begin with, but it's also effective to test foundation on the jawline, which showcases your undertones best.

HAS THE RIGHT UNDERTONES

Undertones can be difficult to understand, but once you have them all figured out, you're on the road to finding the perfect foundation! Each persons skin tone is either one of the following and should look for foundations that match: cool, neutral, or warm.

If you have pink, red and blue undertones, you're a cool undertone. Blue or purple veins can be the most obvious indicators. If you're somewhere in the middle as your complexion doesn't lean too cool or warm, you're a neutral. A good way to determine whether or not you're a neutral is to see if your skin appears olive-y in the sun or if your veins are blue-green.

If you're warm, your complexion has warmer yellow or peach undertones with greenish veins. It appears yellowish in the sun. Figuring out your undertones will better allow you to find a foundation that will blend flawlessly with your skin!

ISN'T HEAVY LIKE CONCEALER

Foundation should always be applied lightly, unlike heavy concealer. When applying foundation, it should show off your real skin, and any freckles you may have. If you need coverage, it should be done with a heavier concealer.

IT'S THE RIGHT FORMULA FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE

Dry, oily, and sensitive skin all have different needs. Different types of formulas will read and bake differently on the skin, so it's important to find out which one is best for your skin type. If you have oily skin, you're best off with a lightweight, oil-free, and matte-finish foundation that will control shine. If you have dry skin, richer and hydrating formulas with moisturizer work best.

If you have sensitive skin, there's not going to be a one-size-fits-all-solution, but avoid irritant-heavy and super-thick formulas. Mineral-based powder is also known to be less irritating on sensitive skin.

IT HAS YOUR DESIRED FINISH

When picking out the perfect foundation, you should know which type of finish you're looking to achieve. If you're looking for a sheer finish, the best formula for the no-makeup makeup look is tinted moisturizers as well as BB and CC creams.

If you're looking for a dewy finish, opt for a similar liquid formula that will give you a smooth, satin-y finish. If you're looking for a matte finish to control shine, opt for a powder formula that will give you medium-to-full coverage.

IT HOLDS OUT THROUGH THE DAY

No one wants a foundation that is going to slide off your skin or give you dry patches as it wears. Sheer coverage foundations tend not to last long, which means you have to be willing to reapply throughout the day. If you aren't down for the commitment, look to a full-coverage foundation.
