In the midst of complicated contouring techniques (see: lip contouring), eye-strobing, and glitter shadow, is a simple makeup trend we've known and loved since the '90s, and not to mention, one that has since been underrated and overlooked – lip gloss. Yes, lip gloss, or in other words, the simplest beauty product in the world, is back and in a big way.
With the emergence of dewy skin taking over the spring/summer 2016 runways, more and more makeup artists are embracing that 'wet' look and playing with the glistening texture in forward-thinking ways (think pale, icy shades, vibrant hues paired with matte skin, and matching glossy eyelids).
And since most of us spent our teenage years in a tight relationship with lip gloss, chances are, the resurgence of the trend will have you racking up a new collection of shades. But beware, the highly pigmented, patent-finish lips popping up on the red carpet don't come easy – there's layering and a lot of touch ups involved. So, without further ado, here are a few tips you'll need before sporting wet-look lips.
MAKEUP TREND: HOW TO ACHIEVE THE PERFECT DEWY LIPS
STEP 1: EXFOLIATE AND SMOOTH
Don't let the texture fool you: Gloss isn't balm and, in most cases, it doesn't protect or hydrate the lips any better than any other coloured lip product. So you need to prep the lips just like you would if you were using lipstick.
After cleansing your skin, gently massage a scrub into dry lips to exfoliate and remove any dead skin. If you don't have a scrub you can even massage your lips with a soft toothbrush. Once you've exfoliated, simply rinse your lips off, and pat them dry with a towel.
STEP 2: HYDRATE AND PLUMP
Now that you've buffed away the dead skin, it's time to hydrate. The best way to do this is to let a rich lip balm soak into your lips for a few minutes. Simply rub a balm of your choice onto the lips and let it sink in for about five minutes. This will also leave your lips looking slightly plumper before putting on lip gloss.
STEP 3: PICK YOUR BASE AND PRIME YOUR POUT
The next step to achieving perfect dewy lips is to pick the base that will sit atop the rest of your complexion. Steer clear of dewy foundation around the mouth when wearing gloss to avoid everything looking sweaty and wet. That greasy look will only be intensified with a glossy lip (as much as we love a good dewy glow!). If you're still into the dewy look, try a wet-looking eyelid and lip gloss over a full-on dewy complexion.
Next, pat off any excess lip balm and apply it, adding just a touch of foundation over your bare lips at the end. Why? Priming your lips will make the final product last longer and provide a base.
STEP 4: LINE YOUR LIPS
Lining your lips will really ensure your gloss will last. It creates a barrier that makes it harder for gloss to migrate, and it gives a polished dimension to the lips. If you're going with a light or clear shade of gloss, just outline the lip line with a flesh-tone pencil. This will allow for a natural, yet polished lip colour that shines through.
However, if you're opting for a colourful or dark gloss shade, plan to line and fill in your lips completely.
STEP 5: CHOOSE YOUR GLOSS
Now it's time for gloss. The question is: clear or coloured? Choose your shade and apply your gloss, then remove the excess by blotting your lips with a paper towel. Then, apply a second coat and repeat.
STEP 6: SANDBAG
For the last step, it's time to lock your slippery, shiny work in place by "sandbagging" outside your lip line. The loose-powder trick keeps everything in place and gives you that polished, complete look. Go outside of the lip line with a small brush and the loose powder, and just gently back up the makeup around the mouth so it looks ultra-clean.
