We've shown you how to contour your complexion with the help of bronzer and highlighter, your eyes with volumizing mascara, and even your lips using two different shades of the same colour and a little liner. But before you think to yourself that surely you've run out of features to slim and highlight, Get The Look presents you with the next big thing: nail contouring.
During New York Fashion Week, NYC-based nail artist and founder of Jin Soon polishes, Jin Soon Choi, unveiled the hack to end all nail hacks: contouring for your digits. According to Soon, it consists of painting your nails a light hue or leaving them bare with a top coat, then brushing a dark colour down the middle, leaving either side bare to make the nails and fingers appear longer. And the technique is open to interpretation – it's all about using negative space to trick the eyes.
So if you're always complaining of short, stubby nails, this is the mani for you. Get The Look is showing you how to achieve contoured nails, step by step. And don't forget to take a look at some Instagram inspo below if you'd like to get creative with it!
MANICURE: HOW TO CONTOUR YOUR NAILS
You will need:
- A clear base coat
- A nail file
- A nail buffing block
- A dark polish of your choice
- Nail stickers
- A clear top coat
Step 1: Start off by soaking your nails in a large bowl of soap and water. This will clean your nails while softening them, making them easier for you to file and buff. Let your hands and nails soak in the water for about 15 minutes.
Step 2: Once your nails are clean, dry them off with a towel. Grab your nail file, and file your nails down to your desired length. Remember to move the file in one motion, as opposed to a back and forth motion that could damage the nail.
Step 3: Once your nails are filed to their desired length, use your buffing block to smooth your nails and rid of any bumps or lines they have.
Step 4: Now for the polish. Begin by coating your nails with a clear top coat. Each nail should receive one, thin coat. Let the coat dry for about 10 minute before continuing on to the next step.
Step 5: After your nails have dried, use long, rectangular shaped nail stickers (or tape if you don't have nail stickers) and place one long sticker on each side of your nail, so that there is a long, rectangular space on your nail in-between the two stickers.
Step 6: Using the dark nail polish colour of your choice, paint the portion of the nail in-between the two stickers. Do this on each nail and let the polish dry for about 10 minutes.
Step 7: Once dry, peel the stickers off and you'll be left with clean, rectangular lines. Finish off by applying a clear top coat to your nails and make sure to let it dry before going about your day!
