Met Gala 2016 hair trend: the bionic ponytail

by Paige Exell -

This year's Met Gala beauty looks came in many different, yet familiar forms. From oxblood lips on Rachel McAdams and Poppy Delevigne, to twisted knots on Karolina Kurkova and Karlie Kloss , guests stuck to the top beauty trends of the season, and added their own futuristic twist.

One trend in particular – the bionic ponytail – stuck out on the red carpet, with celebs like Zoe Saldana , Hailey Baldwin, Elle Fanning, and Alicia Vikander giving the understated hairstyle a cyborg-approved upgrade.

Braided, flat-ironed, and wrapped in thin strips of metal, last night's ponytails came in all variations, bound together by one unspoken rule: the higher and slicker, the better.

TOUSLED PONYTAIL

While sleek, flat-ironed ponytails seemed to be the look of choice on last night's red carpet, Oscar-winning actress, Alicia Vikander, strayed away from the norm with her tousled take on the bionic ponytail.

To achieve her look, apply Studio Line Matt & Messy definition Spray to damp hair from your roots to your ends and then blow dry with your fingers for maximum volume and texture. Once dry, create a centre part and begin braiding a section on either side of the part back and away from your face. Use your fingers to bring hair back into a ponytail at the crown of your head and secure with an elastic.

Take a small section from under the ponytail and lightly tease and spray with Volume Supersizing Spray before wrapping the section of hair around the base of the ponytail. Apply Volumizing Mousse to the hair and scrunch into the dry ponytail to create additional texture. Finish off with a volumizing, strong-hold hairspray.

SLEEK PONYTAIL

Want to achieve a sleek ponytail shown off by Elle Fanning and Hailey Baldwin? Start by applying Styling Heat Spray to your hair and continue using a flat-iron to straighten out the lengths of your hair. Use a brush to pull your hair into a sleek no fly-away ponytail at the top of your head, secure with an elastic.

Take a section of hair from underneath your ponytail and wrap it around the base of the ponytail, secure with a bobby pin. Finally, use a strong-hold hairspray to spray the top of your head, ensuring that your pony tail is free of bumps and fly-aways.

BRAIDED PONYTAIL

L'Oreal Paris ambassador Zoe Saldana kept on-trend, opting for a braided version of this simplistic look. To achieve Zoe's Rapunzel braid hair, use styling gel to pull your hair back into a tight ponytail at the crown of your head.

Take one section of hair from underneath your ponytail and wrap it around the base of the ponytail, securing it with an embellishment or clip of your choice. Spray Studio Line Matt & Messy Definition spray to your ponytail to give your braid added volume. Scrunch the formula into your hair with your fingers.

Finish off by braiding your hair from the base of the ponytail, to the ends.

You're now have a red carpet-approved ponytail!
