Last night, rockers, models and TV stars brought their A-game to the 2016 MTV Europe Music Awards in Rotterdam, Holland. And while the EMAs might be all about the music, we were a little too focused on what gloss and eyeliner the guests were wearing – Can you blame us?
These red carpet beauty looks ranged from low-key lips (and statement ones) to big hair 'dos that acknowledged this season's textured hair trend. They even brought back the spirit of the '90s with lip gloss, girl-band hairstyles and enough eyeshadow to paint a wall. With so many gorgeous, unique looks, the real question is: how can you possibly choose a favourite?
From "Boom Clap" singer Charli XCX to British supermodel Jourdan Dunn, here are some of the best beauty moments and trends we spotted on the 2016 MTV EMAs red carpet.
Vibrant red lips have been spotted on multiple celebrities as of late, and now, the classic trend has made its way overseas for the MTV EMAs red carpet. As always, you can count on British musician Charli XCX to get the party started. The singer paired her bubblegum-pink crop top and baby-pink faux fur with a bright red lip that made for a unique contrast against her outfit. She completed her beauty look with major mascara and a '90s girl-band-inspired ponytail that we've also spotted recently on celebs like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner.
Model and blogger Sonya Esman followed suit, opting for an overall romantic look that consisted of a full red lip and high messy ponytail with effortless loose strands around her face.
British supermodel Jourdan Dunn lit up the red carpet quite literally with her heavily highlighted cheekbones. She gained extra glam points for pairing her glowing complexion with smoky eyes and some old-fashioned lip gloss. To get this look, simply use a fluffy brush to blend highlighting powder across the upper part of your cheekbones, temples, inner corners of your eyes and your brow bone.
Coloured shadow is nothing new this season, but celebrities are always finding new and unique ways to wear it! Our latest inspiration? Bulgarian-Canadian actress Nina Dobrev who got the '90s memo and opted for purple shadow, natural blush and a pretty coral pout.
Meanwhile, German actress Sandra Lambeck took a different route, embodying this season's red makeup trend – and not on her lips. The actress wore a copper-y red shadow on her lids, and matched the rest of her complexion with a red blush and subtle matte red lip.
Lip gloss – our timeless companion – has recently gained momentum in the beauty world once again. It's an easy way to add life to your lips without going overboard, and it pairs nicely with a dramatic smoky eye or over-the-top beauty look. Model Winnie Harlow made her MTV EMA red carpet appearance wearing glossy lips and a metallic gold shadow that lit up the red carpet.
Last, but certainly not least. Swedish songwriter and EMA award-winner Zara Larsson ditched the unofficial '90s theme of the night and opted for an '80s-inspired perm, instead. If you're into the textured look but too afraid of commitment, get this look by tying your hair into a bunch of small braids that run from root to tip then sleep on it. Remove the braids in the morning and voila! Textured locks sans commitment!
