MTV Video Music Awards 2016: the best dressed celebrities on the red carpet

by Paige Exell -

Last night, the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where celebrities (and their children) brought their A-game to the red carpet. Of all the awards shows, the MTV Video Music Awards have always featured some of the year's riskiest – not to mention, risqué – fashion. Anything goes on the Video Music Awards red carpet, and in this case, the more outrageous the better (remember Lady Gaga's meat dress or Miley's barely-there Versace?).

To say the stars on the VMA red carpet don't hold back when it comes to insane fashion would be an understatement – and the 2016 VMAs were no exception to the rule. From sheer gowns to mini skirts, loud prints, and tops that barely cover anything at all, celebrities in attendance this year proved that the event is not only one of the biggest nights in music, but in fashion, as well.

Check out all of the looks from the 2016 VMAs, from Beyonce to Hailey Baldwin, Britney Spears, and even Blue Ivy!

BEST DRESSED CELEBRITIES AT THE 2016 VMAS

This year's VMAs red carpet saw celebrities like Taylor Hill, Rita Ora, Amber Rose, Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande, Hailee Steinfeld, Naomi Campbell and more hit the red carpet. And as expected, their looks were completely over-the-top, giving us a serious case of envy.

One of this years' major fashion trends? Sheer. While Hailey Baldwin rocked a sheer black embellished jumpsuit, Kim Kardashian took a simpler approach to the trend wearing a sheer black, long-sleeved mini dress. Meanwhile, Beyonce stole the show in a sheer powder blue floor-length gown adorned with everything from ornaments to sequins and even feathers.

Other celebrities strayed away from gowns all together, showing us just how glamorous a chic pair of pants can be. Ariana Grande paired her black trousers with a lace off-the-shoulder crop top while Amber Rose took on a traditional pantsuit-blazer duo and complimented it with her signature shades and a red lip.

Psychedelic patterns, sequins, and bold colours also made their appearances on Hailee Steinfeld, Taylor Hill Stella Maxwell who matched their eye makeup to their gowns for three super daring looks.

Meanwhile, Britney Spears showcased an elegant black slit cut-out gown – a look that is quite a change from the Canadian tuxedo gown she wore years back.

BEAUTY TRENDS

The VMAs are known to bring some of the most outrageous outfits to the red carpet. And this year, not only did celebrities pull out all the stops in the fashion department, but they brought their A-game in the beauty department, as well. For fall 2016, dark eyeliner, mascara, shadow is a must-try makeup look, which is why we were so excited to see it in many different forms at the 2016 VMAs.

Supermodel Taylor Hill arrived wearing a pink sequin gown, and wasn't afraid to compliment her ensemble with a bold makeup look to match. The brunette beauty wore multi-coloured glitter shadow on her eyelids, and enhanced her eyes even further with a bold, smoky cat eye and full brows. Meanwhile, Rita Ora showed off her own take on the dark eyed look, sporting grey shadow on her upper and lower lash lines, a heavy dose of black liner, and a matte complexion to finish it off.
