Pixel Hair: the latest beauty trend taking over our Instagram feeds

by Paige Exell -

It all started with the 2016 Manus x Machina themed Met Gala, a nod to fashion and beauty in the age of technology. Celebs hit the red carpet in the form of chic cyborgs and digital dudes embodying the theme in everything from head-to-toe metallics, body harnesses, and even silver hair (we're looking at you, Ciara!).

Later on, at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale stepped out onto the red carpet wearing one futuristic braid down the middle of her head, parting her hair on each side. The latest in technological hair innovations? It's now possible to have your own HD "high definition" hair!

Zoom in on the latest futuristic hair trend blowing up our Instagram feeds which will be sure to inspire the geek within us all!

Oddly enough, the latest Instagram beauty trend #PixelHair, arose by mistake. "This style has actually been created by mistake. We were preparing for a show for 4,500 people. While I was managing one of the models, I got a result I did not expect at all. After that, we began to study this effect and improve it until it became a trend," the stylist responsible said.

And just like that, the trend spread like wild fire to everybody's favourite social media outlet: Instagram. The futuristic colouring trend originally came along with the hashtag #xprecisionpixel, then became #PixelHair.

So, what exactly is #PixelHair? The concept is basically this: small squares and filaments of one colour bunched up together on top of another base colour, creating a blurred, pixelated look on your hair that makes for one robotic hairstyle.

Although this look contributes to the seasons futuristic hair trend, it takes things to a whole new level, making one difficult-to-pull off look. So, if you're the type that likes to take risks with your hair colour and style, go ahead and adopt this digital hairstyle! But remember that you'll need to make an appointment at your fave hair salon and see a professional to get the correct look.

If you aren't so willing to hop on over to the future quite yet, you can admire from afar (and by afar, we mean from Instagram!). See some of the coolest #PixelHair looks and get inspired!
