Pro tips: how to apply foundation

by Alice McGenniss-Destro -

Though it's hard to believe when looking at our favorite celebrities (and their glowing complexions) on the red carpet, no one has totally flawless skin. Luckily, however, a good quality foundation and expert application can at least make it appear like we do!

While everyone has their own preferred tools and techniques for applying makeup, there are certain tricks you can employ for a flawless finish every time. And here they are...

The essentials

Moisturizer, primer, foundation, translucent setting powder, a flat brush, and a powder brush.

Prep your skin

For the perfect canvas, make sure your skin is clean and moisturized. Allow 2-5 minutes for your moisturizer to sink in, any shorter and the surface will be too greasy to work with. Next, apply a dewy primer to your fingertips to warmthe product, and then allow it to "melt" into your skin. Primer is a quick complexion smoother that will minimize pores, fill in fine lines and mattify your skin.

Applying your foundation

If you're only after a little bit of coverage, use your fingers. However, if you're after an airbrushed finish, use a flat brush or sponge. To begin, distribute a small amount of foundation onto the back of your hand and then dip your flat brush into the product. Use the brush to dot the foundation across your cheeks, chin, nose and forehead, as well as concentrating on any "problem areas".

Next, blend the dots together by swirling your brush in a circular motion. Start blending from the middle of your face, out towards your hairline and finish by blending down across your jawline.

To remove excess product, use the brush to gently buff the foundation into your skin.

Finish with powder

Dust translucent powder across your face to further blur away imperfections and set your makeup all day long!
