Last night was a busy one for award shows, with the 2016 Hollywood Film Awards in Los Angeles, and the 2016 MTV EMAs taking place across the pond in Holland. And while European celebs adopted over-the-top beauty looks and '90s-inpspired makeup trends for their red carpet appearances, Hollywood celebs kept things a little more low key in the beauty department. Guests included everyone from Kate Hudson, Leslie Mann, Julianne Moore, Clint Eastwood, Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, L'Oreal muse Susan Sarandon and more.
These stars' makeup looks may have been more on the subtle side last night, but that doesn't mean they didn't manage to catch our eye. Red lipstick, blush and eye makeup reigned on last night's red carpet, making us re-think everything we thought we knew about the vibrant shade. This season, red makeup has come in many different forms, and thanks to celebrities like Natalie Portman, Lily Collins and Janelle Monae, it isn't reserved solely for your lips anymore!

RED MAKEUP: HOW TO WEAR IT
If you're a fan of red lipstick and would rather not experiment with the classic colour, take notes from Leslie Mann, Janelle Monae and Susan Sarandon who spiced up their beauty looks with a vibrant (or subtle) red lip. While each woman opted for a different shade of red lipstick, all of their looks had one thing in common: Subtle eye makeup.
If you're wearing a vibrant red lip, there's no need for an equally dramatic eye makeup look. Keep the focus on your gorgeous pout! Janelle Monae paired a set of vibrant red lips with a light brown shadow and a hint of liner and mascara for added emphasis on the eyes. Leslie Mann went a similar route, pairing a deep red glossy lip with a soft, orange-brown shadow that made her green eyes pop! Meanwhile, L'Oreal Paris ambassador Susan Sarandon complimented her subtle red lip with a light brown shimmery shadow and a hint of volumizing mascara.
If you'd prefer to keep the focus on your cheeks in order to enhance your bone structure, take inspiration from Natalie Portman and Bryce Dallas Howard who used a light reddish-pink blush to add warmth to their pale complexions. Both women went for a subtle look that simply enhanced their natural features, and kept it simple with nothing more than a hint of mascara and a touch of red lip stain.
To get this look, simply apply your preferred shade of blush onto your cheeks, then enhance your lids with a light shade of brown shadow and shimmery white on your inner corners. Finish up with a red lip stain to enhance your natural lip colour!
Recently, red eye makeup has been popping up everywhere in the beauty world. The latest celebrity to rock the trend? Lily Collins, who stepped out onto the red carpet with a dramatic red lip, matte complexion and burgundy eye shadow. Red lips paired with red eyes make for the perfect glam combination!
To get this look, apply a burgundy shadow onto your lids, extending upwards past your crease and towards your brow bone. Use a dark grey or black shadow, and blend it into the outer corners of your eyes and your crease.
When applying your red lipstick, start with a dark shade of red on the entire surface area of your lips, then apply a lighter shade of red onto the centre of your mouth!
