The 2016 summer Olympics are well underway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where athletes from around the world have come together to put their hard work to the test and bring home the gold for their countries. And while there's no denying that we tend to get a little mesmerized watching athletes compete (especially when Michael Phelps swim laps in the pool), you watch enough qualifying rounds and your eye may start to drift – to that genius manicure Michael Phelps' fiancé was sported as she cheered him on. Or to the cool cat eye that Lauren Hernandez wore while holding steady on the balance beam, giving her eyes an added look of determination.
First, the Olympics are about feats of athlete prowess, hard work, determination, and overcoming adversity. But, they're also a melting pot of the coolest beauty looks from around the world. Without further ado, we're giving you 5 beauty trends worn by Olympic athletes at Rio 2016.
5 BEAUTY TRENDS SEEN ON OLYMPIC ATHLETES
Whether it's glitter brows, glitter lips, or glitter lids, glitter is easily one of the hottest beauty trends of 2016 – and apparently, it's an adorable way of showing love for your country, as well! U.S.A Olympic athlete Simone Biles has adopted the trend while competing, opting for a subtle line of glitter just beneath her lower lash line and inner corners. A dusting of silver on the inner corners, a streak of blue on the bottom lashline, and first place in every event she's competed in so far... we can learn a thing or two from Simone!
In the fashion and beauty world, the classic feline flick provides a sultry, evening look and gives off a major sense of femininity. But for the 2016 summer Olympics, U.S.A's Lauren Hernandez gave the cat eye a whole new meaning when she wore it while holding steady on the balance beam. Her killer flicked-up cat-eye gave her eyes an added sense of determination – not to mention, she used her excellent poise to pull it off!
This spring/summer 2016, ponytails made major waves on runways and red carpets. Whether they were high, low, sleek, or loose, our favourite celebrities turned the lazy girl hairstyle into a high fashion statement. Now, at Rio 2016, Brazilian volleyball player Jaqueline Endres, showed us a new way to rock the trend using nothing more than a few extra elastics. The strong athlete kept her ponytail in check with cool sections, created by placing elastics down the length of her ponytail.
To get this look, simply pull your hair back into a ponytail and secure with an elastic. Then, place another elastic further down on your ponytail (a few inches from the first elastic), and pull the section of hair in-between outwards with your fingers for a more voluminous look. Repeat with another elastic until you reach your ends. Spray with hairspray if you're looking to rock this look for a night out!
Nail art is all the rage at this year's summer Olympics, with athletes like Simone Biles, Mahsa Javar, and even Michael Phelps' fiancé, Nicole Johnson, sporting patriotic nails. While American gymnast Simone Biles wore a glitter French manicure completed with sparkling American flag to compete, Nicole Johnson went a little further, showing off white, gold, blue, and red glitter nails adorned with everything from the American flag to the Olympic rings.
Nail art is the easiest way to spice up your look without being too over-the-top, so if you aren't sure how to add a little life to your look, give this trend a try!
Double braids (or boxer braids) are the perfect way to look good and keep hair out of your face – as demonstrated by Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Great Britain, who kept her hair out of the way with nothing more than a cool headband and boxer braids!
