Sculpting: Everything you need to know to enhance your best assets

Sculpting – the application method used to shape your facial features using makeup – has been the preferred technique among makeup artists for many years, but has only recently made waves in the beauty sphere thanks to some of our favourite celebs and beauty influencers. And while sculpting and contouring have often been reserved solely for Hollywood stars in the past, thanks to cosmetics brands like L'Oreal Paris, performing the technique is becoming more accessible than ever.

Sculpting your face, eyes, and even your mouth has never been so quick and easily achieved as it is now! That's why Get The Look, in partnership with L'Oreal Paris, is bringing you the best tips to enhance and define your best features.

When the word sculpting comes to mind, we often think of perfectly defined cheekbones and jawlines that are created with the help of a liquid or powder foundation that's slightly darker than our skin tones. But with recent innovations in makeup, it's now possible to contour everything from your complexion, to your lips, and even your eyes, enhancing all of your best assets for one glamorous look! Not sure where to begin? Read on to find out how you can enhance each and every one of your features using the sculpting technique.

FACE SCULPTING

Enhancing your basic facial features is the easiest, and most common way the sculpting application technique is used. It goes like this: sculpting is when you use a matte powder, cream, or pencil product that's two shades darker than your skin tone to shade areas you'd like to define or reshape, like your lower cheekbones, jawline, temples, and sides of your nose that surround the bridge. Use the darker shade in L'Oreal's Infallible Pro-Contour Palette to achieve this perfectly sculpted, bronzed goddess look.

And while simply sculpting with a darker matte product was the original way of our favourite celebrities and beauty influencers, the sculpting technique has advanced since then, introducing new shades into our beauty routine to further enhance our look. The latest innovation that goes hand-in-hand with sculpting? Highlighting (also known as 'strobing'), offsets sculpting by accentuating areas of your face with a lighter powder.

To properly highlight or strobe, use the lighter shade in the Infallible Pro-Contour Palette to emphasize the areas of your face that naturally catch the light: the middle of your forehead, chin, high points of your cheekbones, and bridge of nose.

LIP SCULPTING

After the whole face sculpting phase, beauty lovers looked for new ways to use the makeup application technique to enhance other features. Now, it's all about faking plumped-up, yet natural-looking lips without any harsh lines that show. And while there are many different ways to apply lip colour, sculpting is the best way to achieve those voluminous lips and that coveted supermodel-approved pout we all want to achieve.

Lip sculpting is all about boosting the shape within your mouth to increase the shape of your lips, although lining your lips is also a major must when it comes to creating that full, desired look! Like facial sculpting, lip sculpting uses different shades of the same colour to create the plump look, enhance your natural features, or hide any imperfections you may have.

To create the effect of large, pouty lips, the best way to apply colour is to choose two lip colours in the Colour Riche Lip Palette – one darker than the other. Trace the edges of your lips with the darker shade using an angled brush, then smudge the lines a bit with your fingers to soften, reducing the appearance of harsh lines. Next, apply the second, lighter lip colour to the surface of your lips. Fill in the middle of your bottom lip with a colour that is one shade lighter than the shade you used to cover the surface, so that it looks like a spotlight on your bottom lip. Blend with your finger to soften the look, giving it a more natural appearance, and voila! Naturally larger lips!

EYE SCULPTING

Eye sculpting – a less commonly known version of the makeup application technique – is used to enhance your eyes for a look that makes them appear larger and brighter. When applying mascara, most people have a tendency to pull their mascara wand up and outwards diagonally towards the end of their eyebrow. This technique works great if you are trying to create the illusion of almond-shaped eyes, but if you want to achieve the appearance of larger eyes, after you curl your lashes, use a lengthening mascara and pull the wand directly upwards.

Not only will this make your lashes look longer (since you're pulling them straight up instead of out at an angle) but it will also make your eyes look rounder, and therefore larger. For maximum length and a flawlessly sculpted look, use L'Oreal's Voluminous Butterfly Sculpt Mascara which provides three sculpting effects in one, for fuller, darker, fuller denser lashes. Pro Tip: the sculpting wing tip brush technology it provides features inner bristles that fill in the lash line for a no gap tightline effect, while brush reservoir loads the entire lash with maximum volume, and outer bristles fan out lash corners to the extreme.
