If you keep up with the music charts, you'll know that Canadian singer Shawn Mendes made a record-breaking debut on the Billboard top 100 with his single "Life of the Party" on July 12. How did Shawn find fame? Through posting snippets of covers of songs on the short video sharing service Vine. He now has over 500,000 likes on his Facebook page, his videos have had millions of views, and is currently touring with Austin Mahone. All that, and he's only 15 years old!
Shawn Mendes, future superstar?
Shawn is proof of the power of social media. He is the youngest artist ever to debut in Top 25 with their debut single. Talking to Billboard, the young star explained how strange - and wonderful - the last few months have been, and how his fan base just took off one day after posting a Vine video cover of Justin Bieber:
"It snowballed to 50,000 in a few weeks, to a 100,000; from October when I had 200,000 to now when I have 2.5 million. It's a cool story when I think back to it [...] I'm definitely not used to anything that's going on, [...] I'm in awe."
Back in March of this year, he won Ryan Seacrest's "Best Cover Song" for "Say Something". It was this cover that got the attention of his now record label, Island Records, who he signed with in May 2014. Now everyone is queuing up to interview him, and we can't help but hope that Shawn is the next pop sensation, and not just living out a Vine-sized moment of fame!
