Skin Care: 5 ways to get more out of the products you're using

by Paige Exell -

Let's face it: Most of us don't have time to apply one million skincare products to look gorgeous and glowing. Or to head to the dermatologist every time our complexions aren't working with us. But don't worry – Get The Look has the ultimate guide on how to use every product in your arsenal. From unexpected application techniques to the one step you should never skip, we're giving you 5 ways to get more out of the products you're using, helping to ensure your products work their magic on your skin every single time.

SKIN CARE: HOW TO GET MORE OUT OF THE PRODUCTS YOU'RE USING

FOCUS ON TECHNIQUE

While you may not think how you apply your face wash or cleanser matters – just that you get it on your skin in some way – think again. There's a real science to cleansing, believe it or not. Concentrate the cleanser where you have the most pores. This will clean out dirt and oil more effectively, so the skincare products you apply afterwards are able to truly penetrate, instead of being blocked by any dirty left behind in pores.

APPLY FACE SERUM WHILE SKIN IS DAMP

You've probably heard that applying moisturizer or body cream while your skin is damp works best – and the same applies to face serum. Apply your face products directly after cleansing or leaving the shower to make sure products are always applied onto damp skin. Even if you don't like washing your face in the morning, all you have to do is dampen your skin before you apply your serum to help lock in hydration. Here's why: As soon as water evaporates off skin, it can dehydrate it by taking all the moisture on and below the surface into the air.

EXFOLIATE A FEW TIMES PER WEEK

In our late '20s – sometimes even earlier – we lose radiance because cell turnover slows down, meaning the skin is not exfoliating as naturally as it should be. This means those dead skin cells get stuck on the surface of the skin, so your complexion doesn't reflect light as readily and looks dull. It also creates a shield on the skin which prevents your products from absorbing into the skin. To allow your products to do exactly what they should be doing, exfoliate two to three times per week (daily is overkill).

LEARN TO LAYER

Applying several serums under your face cream and sunscreen is the secret to a healthy, glowy complexion. Serums contain the mega dose of active ingredients that target what your skin needs, where it's anti-aging, antioxidants, hydration, repair – serums have it all. What's important to remember: Serums always go first. The rule is – apply thinnest to thickest. Cleanse, use a toner, then serum and a cream last. This will ensure that your serums are penetrating into the skin.

CHANGE UP YOUR MORNING AND NIGHT SKINCARE ROUTINES

You don't want your morning and nighttime routine to be the same. Nighttime is more about repair and morning is about protection. During the day, opt for an anti-oxidant rich serum and hydrating cream with sunscreen. Before bed, use a vitamin A or retinol-based product to help cell turnover and cocoon your skin with moisture. Hydration overnight is key!
