Sneakers: a must-have for spring-summer 2016!

Sneakers: a wardrobe must-have for spring-summer 2016!

by Paige Exell -

With the weather finally warming up, it's time to start thinking about the light footwear that will be needed to conveniently run about with no sweat (literally). Need a hint? The past few seasons have proved that sneakers are a functional, yet fashionable approach to footwear, making them the perfect option for spring-summer 2016.

It started with Chanel's Fall 2014 supermarket runway show that featured floor-length skirts and dainty pastels, not with traditional feminine high heels, but with modern, playful sneakers that challenged the phrase "beauty is pain." There was something subversive about pairing an ensemble so prim and proper with flat sneakers, making it socially acceptable for women to enjoy a sense of freedom away from the crippling high heel.

The trend continued as fashion bloggers by the likes of Kristina Bazan, Sincerely Jules, and Alicia Roddy showed us how to turn sneakers from carefree to office-appropriate footwear with the help of the right ensemble. Celebs like Kanye West, Kylie Jenner, and Rihanna have also turned sneakers into a major must-have with the introduction of Yeezy's, followed by Kylie and Rihanna's distinct collaborations with Puma.

Can't decide which type of sneaker to try this season? We've put together a list of the 3 sneaker must-haves for spring-summer 2016, inspired by a few of Instagram's favourite fashion bloggers.

A fresh pair of all-white sneakers is key when it comes to making an otherwise plain ensemble stand out from the crowd. Whether you prefer dresses, jeans, or even office-appropriate dress pants, a clean pair of bright white sneakers will stand out as the perfect accent to just about any style and colour outfit your heart desires.

Spring is the perfect opportunity to play around with colour, so take advantage of the season and opt for a pair of pastel sneakers in a pale shade of pink, blue, or even purple. For the ultimate spring look, take a style hint from Alicia Roddy and match your sneakers to your jacket.

For those of you who don't actually plan on using your sneakers to run errands or exercise in, the platform sneaker is just right for you. A combination of style and comfort (kind of), the platform sneaker is extremely versatile, and can be worn just about anywhere from day to night. If you want to ensure that all eyes are on your fab footwear, keep your outfit on the casual side.
